After driving my car yesterday, I noticed a puddle of coolant (green, smells like coolant, feels like coolant) around the DRIVER's side rear wheel. I looked all the hoses and could not find a leak. Started it up today and went for a 10 minute drive. Upon return and parkign it in the garage, I saw the coolant dripping - from the fiberglass inner wheel well and it was all over the inside of the driver's side rear wheel. I checked all the hoses from above and the side and I cannot find a single drop.

    No cooling issues, though.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Been discussed many times. Chances are its overflow from the expansion tank because the cap has gone weak on you - they don't last. You should also have a 1.1 bar cap on it rather than the original 0.9 bar thing.

Bleed your radiator & then top the system up - it will be low. If it gets too low then you will see erratic movement on the temperature gauge which is one step away from cooking the motor.

Get a new cap before you drive it much further & keep a good eye on the coolant level and the temperature gauge until you do.

If you change the cap & its still leaking then get a pressure test done on the thing & you'll find the leaky hose/joint soon enough.

Driver's side on a US model, just inboard of the rear wheel?

I had that today, too. Did you fill your expansion tank to the top? (I was trying to add a little antifreeze to a mostly water mix.)

The overflow from the expansion tank exits there.

If the car was running hot, or your expansion tank (cold) is below the halfway mark, I'd say check the pressure cap to see if it's opening too soon.

But otherwise, it's just ejecting excess coolent.

Edit: Even translating "driver's side", the Brit types faster than me. ;) (Durn notebook keyboard)

I am pretty sure that you guys are right. I have not added coolant at all lately so it has to be the cap going bad. I'll try and get one tomorrow and see how that works out.

Is it important that I thoroughly clean the coolant off of the wheel well?

Just rinse the coolant off, no big deal. Won't hurt the fiberglass wheel well liner.

Problem solved. It was the cap.

    Thanks everyone.
