328 Cooling Fan Direction

I'm doing some radiator work on my 86 328 and have been wondering why the cooling fans blow out to the radiator, towards the front of the car. I always thought the 328 fan "sucked" in air that comes in from the front grille and exhausted the warm air thru the top grill at the front part of the bonnet.

Wouldnt' blowing the air to the thru the radiator to the front of the car be inefficient as the car moves forward? It seems to me the airflow into the front of the car as it moves forward will cancel out the push of the cooling fan towards the front.
