When replacing my thermostat yesterday for a new, original, one I noticed the bottom of thermos (ring) not touching the body of the housing so effectively allowing flow through all 3 openings...(the 2 between the V and the one on the block). Could this be correct?

The thermostat should have a black rubber seal/ring around the edge, which seals off any water path around it. Do you have a photo of what you're describing?

Unfortunately no,no picture. It does have the rubber seal and it fits perfectly. When I turn the assembly around and look in the top of the two openings ( on which the hoses going through the v-shape are connected ) I can see the bottom of the valve approx 1/2 inch above the seat?!

It will sit right there until the thermostat opens. Then it will begin to move back. Per Dave Helms in an earlier post: "The stat is a two stage unit, as it opens the passage to the radiator it blocks the re-circulation port going back to the engine."

What you're seeing is normal, no worries.

Tnx 4 your reply! I did read the cooling system of a 328 was different but never thought it was that different....back to school I guess. Once again, thanks for taking away my fear of some previous mechanic screwing up my 328...Since it has always been running on the cool side (yeah, really) I thought this had to be the problem,I'd better check my gauges...
    Best regards,
    Richard

You should be fine. Just be sure that a new one has all of the seals/gaskets, is seated well and that it has the "12 o'clock" air bleed hole :) I drilled my own, it's no big deal to do.

Of course, all maintenance activities as photografied and archived. That's the reason why I can alway provide pictures to ilustrate your comments.

Regarding the thermostat, the photopraph comes from the file containing the last periodic operational test .
