Here's a shot of a 328 dash, with the original vinyl. To the left of the clock, you'll see how the material no longer adheres to the console 'frame'.

    Does vinyl shrink?

Anyone had this happen and repaired it?

It really looks awful - didn't think vinyl shrunk like leather did. I'm in the process of buying this car and trying to figure out how big a deal this is.

the vinyl can come unglued. Those trim pieces are made from metal and fiberglass with vinyl glued ovr them. The trick is to find a glue that sticks to both vinyl and fiberglass and/or metal. I've tried hot glue, goop, and some kind of contact cement, but not been happy with any of them.

there's probably some adhesive that works great. suggestions?

Radio by Tubi - located aft and under. ;)

Thanks - sounds way easier than having this thing disassembled and re-covered in vinyl.

Actually, I think many came from the factory that way. Too hard to get a good fit right there. My old 87 looked like that. My current 89 not as bad but other flaws can be found if you look hard enough. I think there is not enough material to fit snuggly in that corner.

You would've thought Italian quality control would catch that...

Does the vinyl look ok under the dash carpet?

    Yes, it's perfect.

That's why I was curious as to whether vinyl actually shrinks - you'd think the top of the dash would get the real heat, while the front of the dash (like around the clock gauge cluster) wouldn't get much.

I could tell you about the various flaws my 430 came with that would never pass a Honda inspector. Let's just say I have chalked it up to Italian character. If it didn't have flaws, I would have wondered if construction was outsourced to Toyota.

Jon, that entire panel comes loose pretty easily, it shouldn't be too hard to fix. My 328 has never had that problem.

Yeah it looks completely separate from the rest of the dash. It doesn't look as hard to do as a complete dash re-covering.

If it's just glue, that's easy. If the material has to be re-stitched, I can see where it would be beyond my meagre upholstery talents.

Must be somewhat common, though. I checked today and there's a photo in Keith Bluemel's Original Ferrari V-8 book in the 308/328 section that shows the same problem, and I know he only photographed really nice cars for that book.

Vinyl definately shrinks, faster in the sun, but it shrinks either way. It also gets hard and brittle with time, again much faster in the sun...plastic hates UV, they add stabilizers, but the stabilizers get consumered with time and the plastic degrades.
