I know this is a common problem. it has been awhile since I had the problem. if I remember right I should first just spray everything WD-40 etc to see if it will start latching tight without adjustment?

Certainly no expert here, but that has worked for me in the past. I've often had problems with the trunk (engine hatch?) staying latched and was able to fix it with a couple of shots of WD.

After rebuilding/adjusting my entire latch mechanism ('77 308), I was finally shown that all I needed was an extra shim on the catch plate in the door frame. Wanted to share in case the WD-40 doesn't cut it.

Mine is very temperature dependent. Below 50 degrees, it needs extra force to close all the way. Everything on and in the door is adjusted and working properly. It is the temp for me.

Can you be a bit clearer on whats happening?

Is the latch catching correctly but the door out line, if so loosen and adjust the stricker plate in the door jam by moving it inwards towards the centre of the car and re-tighten.

    or

Is the latch jumping out of the catch to its secondary latch position, this can be due to several issues including worn latch, pull handle adjustment - even down to closing angle (possible door hinge wear) when closing the door push the door lock not the top of the door and see if that makes any difference with its acceptance, then please come back and we'll go from there.

it is doing a few things, sometimes latches, but door doesn't sit flush about half inch out. other times it doesn't latch at all, just "bounces" when slamming. key won't lock, handles not very effective. same ole same ole, although I haven't had it happen in 5+ years.

Try tightening all the bolts in the door jam. Usually some are loose. This is a yearly PM - planned maintenance for me, door, trunk, boot etc...

If the key won't lock then you will need to adjust the mechanism, I would suggest removing the door card and take a look whats happening first person, there are rods and a braided cable operating the latch and release handle, its pretty easy to see and adjust if something is too tight.

around the little notched round bolt, then worked it a little. I believe when cold and dirty it just doesn't rotate enough if really bad to get any latch or if just a little bad then to keep door flush.

The latching wheel on my driver door does not move far enough to latch in the second position. It appears that I need to move the strike on the jam lower to catch sooner or foward to get it to reach the second latching position while the door still has travel. I am unsure about my ability to re tightening these bolts as it doesn't look like there is easy access to what's behind the jam. I have removed the door panel and I have observed the nuts holding the latching wheel do not appear to be locked in place and it looks like I would need to be on both sides of bolt to tighten them.

Will the strike bolts re tighten without putting a wrench on the nuts behind the jam?
