Hi All, Do I have to remove the entire door panel to get to the door speakers? I tried un screwing the four screws in the corners of the speaker panel, but it wouldn't budge... Looking at some parts diagrams, it looks like it's a separate piece..

    Thanks; John

If it is all original, yes, you do have to remove the entire door panel to get to it.

While on the topic, could someone post a pic of what "original" is please. I'm 99% certain that mine aren't and I would like to see what is.

    Thanks,

    Lester

    Lester,

I have already posted it, but I do it again...this is a picture of the inside of the pass. door of my 328 GTS (châssis 80515, assembly date Feb. 24th, 1989).
It is original as far as I know (except for the gear lever knob with white infill, but a new one has since be substitued, with the correct orange infill)
On its GTB sister, the door is exactly the same: the speakers are invisible, behind the carpet.
    Hope this helps.
(I don't even know how they sound, I have never even tried the stereo in this car)

Thank you Sir, I do forget a lot of things.. so no speaker should be visible. Got it.

    Lester,

In a nutshell: yes! That means that when you look at the door, you can't even guess there is a speaker behind that carpet.

But on cars that have received updated sound systems later, most speakers are somewhat visible because the doors are rather too thin to put any good quality speaker inside the door.
Should you want to put any quality speaker into that door, the speaker will probably be too deep to be fully flush with the carpet.

By the way, on my "B" the whole sound system is fully OEM, even the tape deck which is a Pioneer KEH 4060 B, as it should be on a french origin Ferrari (the importer, Charles Pozzi, had a sponsorship deal with Pioneer - witness Jean-Claude Andruet rallying 308 GTB at the beginning of the eighties). Although there even is a small cavallino on the tape deck, the sound is nevertheless really crappy...

I have brought it back to fully functional - changed the fuse, cleaning the antenna, etc...but never uses it.

    Best,

I'm not sure, but I believe the original size is not 16cm. What I do remember is that I had a hard time finding a modern speaker that would fit the space (diameter, not depth)
I remember mine are Alpine but can't remember the reference. I hardly use them, anyway :)

Today the closedt standard is little larger in dia (16.5 cm) and did not fit well so I had the orininals repaired. Mine are 16 cm in dia and delivered with the 328 in 1988.

For what it's worth, my 308 takes a 6" speaker. I've had great luck with Boston Acoustics. Great tone and great clearance for internal door mechanisms.

I just put 6 1/2" speakers in my GTB. They fit perfectly. I went with a set of Infinity speakers.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I'll take the whole panel off... Looking back at some of the previous posts it doesn't seem too difficult..

You might want to head to the hardware store for some long sheet metal screws.

You have to anchor the speakers to the door panel, either with clips or by putting new holes in the door around the speaker opening.

I put 6.5" speakers in the 328, but the dweeb who put the last stereo in already cut holes in the door panel.
And the speakers didn't really line up with the holes in the door.
So I drilled and tapped four new holes around the speaker opening.

I also put connectors on the speaker wires in the door, because now I'll have to remove the speakers to remove the door panel. :(

You'll have to be careful what music you play in your car with the new speakers - or this can happen :)

I went to Rockport speakers. '83 they were covered by OEM leather.

What are the dimensions of your speaker and did you have to enlarge the hole in the door?

I didn't do the tweeters. My car had an amp and a crossover system when I bought it. The door speakers were dry rotted and needed replacing. IMO, after my experiences with 2 328's, you're never going to create a sound system that sounds amazing in the car. I never drove with mine on, I preferred the sound of the engine.
