Hi All: Anyone with hands on experience on the 88 328 engine gearbox seperation. Pulled one engine out a while back and it seemed like I needed to get the oil pan and other stuff removed to be able to seperate the gearbox. On another note: got a 328 with 45K miles whole front end messed up looking to get 14K. Engine starts and runs just fine. Need some TLC. Interion is clean. Help is appreciated. Steve
Sure, no problem. -Remove transfer gear case cover -Remove lower gear locking nut -Extract bearing and internal snap ring (easier) -Remove bell housing -Remove clutch and flywheel assembly -Remove all hardware that holds the "sandwich plate" to the engine and gearbox -Remove sandwich plate -Remove all hardware along the perimeter of the block (securing to transaxle case) -Double check that all hardware has been removed under the front crank pulley -Lift the engine off of the transaxle (No need to pull any of the oil pans...) Photos are from a 308QV, but the procedure is identical for a 328.. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice reference pictures if, God forbid, I ever have to do this. Looks like the engine would have to come out then, eh? (LOL)
I think FASTRADIO covered this in his "Perimeter Hardware" part, but just in case.... If you don't already have the heads off... remove the nut that holds the dipstick tube from the front cam belt cover and spin the dipstick tube out of the way or just take it off. I saw a buddy straighten his out nicely by forgetting to do this when he separated the motor and gearbox. Amazingly, the cam belt cover did not break. Rick
