i had p6000 tyres on my 89, the rears were worn so i put on pzero nero's in the standard size.Car was literally undriveable, so rang the tech line at pirelli and they said"its because you have high performance tyres on the front and ultra high on the back", back to the dealer for 2 p zero nero fronts, again standard size.Car is better but still feels unbalanced-have had it back to my tech to check bushes, suspension etc and he can find nothing. Should i look at playing round with tyre pressure? At present i am running standard pressure of 2.3 bar front and 2.5 rear.Help needed as this is stopping me from enjoying her...the bloody p6000 felt better and they might as well have been made from teflon for all the grip they offered!

Why didn't you just buy P6000's if you liked them so much? They are available at Tirerack.com in standard sizes.

Start with the basics: ride height and four wheel alignment. After that, you can tweak with tire pressures.

Also, if you have somewhat new tires on one end, and brand new on the other, you may be feeling the effects of the release compound that coats most new tires. That typically wears off after 300 miles or so.

What's it doing under what sort of load? Backend feels edgy, too much push, what?

Agreed... I'm not sure what's available "across the pond", but very few people I know outside of the Ferrari world run Pirelli tires.

I hated the p6000's, they offered no grip. I wanted to try pirelli because the p zero rossa has had so much good press. They do not do the rossa in the sizes i wanted but according to the pirelli web site the nero's were ideal for the fast dry road driving i was looking for. I have already scrubbed the tyres in and the ride height looks fine as do the shocks.Wheel camber looks fine, and the problem has only occured since the tyre change. The best way i can describe it, is it feels as if the rear is gently drifting out even on low / medium speed bends. I have thrashed it into low speed turns and the rear sticks, but the feeling through the steering and "seat of the pants" is one of drifting and the car no longer feels as happy in a straight line needing a lot of steering correction. The balance on the wheels is fine and the car tracks straight..., i have noticed it feels a little better with a full tank of fuel but other than that i am out of ideas.

If you had toe-in before, and your shop aligned you factory straight (or toe-out) during your tire-change, then you would feel less stable by the seat of the pants.

You'd get a similar change in ride feeling (i.e. feels less stable) if you had positive camber prior to your tire change, but then had your tire shop change to a correct negative or neutral camber.

You may very well be set up correctly now, or set to a performance/race alignment with toe-out (wheels point out just a bit) and/or negative camber (wheels lean in just a bit).

...and if I've confused any of the above terminology/directions, rest assured that my F-Chat fan club will be along quickly to correct me!

I don't know the system (my '88 is pre-ABS), but is it possible that an ABS sensor wire got itself unplugged (or maybe shorted) during the rear tire swap?

The shop has not touched anything mechanical-it was a simple tyre change.I am wondering if i am just getting a lot more feedback than i had from the old tyres? I cant see how the abs system would affect the car? When i changed the rears origanally they were shafted, but the fronts were still in excellent condition. Is it possible that as the car is so light on the fronts that they are just going to take a lot longer to scrub in? Maybe i need to do a lot of high speed emergency stops!-or drive to scotland or london. Thanks for the help though!

Your car will always feel very different with new tyres on. More so with new tyres of a different brand.
Steering will always feel lighter and (existing suspension problems will be highlighted by the seat of the pants feel too ) by new tyres and alignment.

In a way you will just have to get used to it.
