I have a 1986 328 that has the front hood support actuator with a pin that pops out to fix the support in place. Then to lower the hood, the pin needs to be pressed to release it.

I believe the 87, 88 and 89 have a pressurized support like ones for the engine cover in the back. Is this true? They changed it because too many people forgot about the release pin and bent the hood, leaving a nice bump that has to be smoothed out and repainted (like mine, before I bought it).

Anyway, the dealer broke my release pin so it will not lock in place.

Can I replace it with a 87-89 support actuator?

I have an 86 328 also and I need to update mine( I already have a little damage). I read someone on Fchat that you can replace the current design with the 87+ design. I just need to know where to buy it.

Yes you can change the strut for the non-pin type one, without any mods. I have done this to my '87 (kept the original on in case).

I prefer the 86 version. It stays up and does not need to be replaced, unlike the rear trunk ones... I think it is not too difficult to remember about the pin.

The weld on the attachment to the hood was broken when I bought the car, so I use an accessory that came with the car--a shortened broomstick! Not very sexy, but it works, and it rests conveniently on top of the spare tire when not in use.

    No no no: it's not a "broomstick", it's a "Yeager Stick". ;)

I believe the switch was at the mid-88s, with the other upgrades (give or take the "until exhaustion" on the old part).

The support was moved to the other side and replaced with a pneumatic piston.

I think the penumatic piston is shorter than the click strut, as the newer design has a couple of "L" bracket attachments at the top and bottom that the old design didn't have.

On the other hand, there are any number of pistons of varying lengths (and strengths) at AutoZone. You can probably get close off the shelf.
