I understand that replacing the valve cover gasket nearest the firewall can be quite a tricky job and mine is leaking onto the header. Anybody know of a set of instructions on this topic? Thanks in advance.

On my 308 the first step is to take off the engine bay lid. More room less hassle.

Good q, I'm sure you'll get good answers, but just to add to your question I was told by my respected mechanic that the gasket kits available today are not as well made and doing it right to avoid leaks takes patience, particularly the left (front) bank. The prior owner of my 308 had this done at a shop in NJ. It was leaking, and I had to have it redone by my shop in PA. Sounds like an opportunity for someone to make a better gasket set.

I use Klingersil (green) gaskets. Dry mount squeaky clean, even torque to spec. No leaks. I also use a directional seal on the cams. Again no leaks. But as you say you will receive many comments and opinions. Cheers!!!

Taking off the engine lid is good advice. Thanks. I have to replace the supports anyway. Does anything else need to be removed to get at it?

No , just remove the rear deck - but suggest don't do it on your own.

First however, are you sure its just the gasket that's leaking and not the cam seal housing O-ring?

Oil can leak there & then track round the corner along the gasket edge.. If the O ring is leaking then the belts are coming off & the cams are coming out....

Suggest a lot of inspection & examination first & maybe a clean up with some brake cleaner & then run the motor again to determine where exactly the oil is coming from - before you determine what the job entails.
