328 Front wheel bearing nut torque

    Can anyone confirm how tight this should be done up? Its not in the 308/328 WSM but the Mondial 8 manual says (on page M8) 45 KgM (325 lbFt). Does anyone know if that's right or is it another Ferrari special WSM typo?

    Thanks but not - the 328 (and Mondials & TR's) use a completely different design of bearing system - not the traditional tapered needle bearings, so (as far as I understand it) its not a matter of setting the bearing up in the usual way. You do the retaining nut up to a specific torque.

    Found this in the tech spec (didn't think to look in there !) but I'm wondering if this is not in fact the ring nut that holds in the rear hub? ."Securing Axle Shaft flange to wheel shaft" sounds like something to do with a driven wheel

    Part 8 in this diag.

    The thing listed above it in the tech spec "Securing Steering knuckle lever" is interesting purely because of the size of the nut (20 x 1.25). WIll have to take a wheel off & measure,, but if its the right size, maybe that's it (16Kgm/115 lbft)

    TR happen to use the same bearing (112799) and nut (124642) on the front "wheel shaft" as the 328 (and, on the later version of each, the exact same wheel shaft is also used -- although installed in different directions). The TR spec is (clearly) given as 25 kg-m in the TR WSM so 22~25 kg-m must be in the right ballpark -- but please do confirm/deny the thread size, if possible. The early 328 wheel shaft looks a little more iffy construction-wise so I might go with the 22 kg-m on that, but, if you have the later 328, I'd use 25 kg-m without worry -- JMO.

    The 348 WSM also confirms 25 Kg-m and that is identical in every way including the ABS wheel on the other end.

    I wonder what that 20mm figure in the 328 list is supposed to be for? Fact is, that list seems woefully inadequate and vague.

    That would seem to settle it then.

    ..and now I need a new torque wrench (which will probably not get used for anything else) because mine doesn't go that high! :(

    (Either that or I have to find an extension for it.....)

    Constance, I am interested to know where you got the figure of 16 KG-M from. This corresponds exactly to the figure mentioned in the 328 tech specs for an unidentified 20mm nut (see above post) and also happens to be the figure I used. Did you get this figure from a different source of information?

    When I replaced mine I ordered an SNR bearing from a bearing supplier but the oil seal fitted on it was too big and rubbed against the stone shield, a problem someone in the Testarossa forum also had. I had to do a modification to make it fit.

    Looking again at the excellent pictures above, I can now see why you didnt have the problem I had with the large rubber oil seal on the SNR bearing rubbing on the stone shield. The shield is missing! That does avoid the problem I suppose!

    Good spot - so does that seal remove the need for the stone/dust shield? If that's pressed down right against the back side of the hub then it may even be a better system?

    If the vertical lip on the new seal were acting on the hub I think it would just wear out very quickly. But it doesnt. This lip does seem designed to have the same function as the stone shield though, but I cant see it being better. The original shield is metal and encases the entire bearing.
    The SNR part number stamped on the bearing I used is the same number as visible on the picture on Superformance website, so presumably this issue also affects bearings supplied by them. Their picture shows the other side though so cant see what type of seal it has.

    The weather shield will prevent water projections to bearing inner flange, and the grease to contaminate the brake disc (seeping). The flange is not sealed.
    The lipseal and the seal runner should be lubricated before assembling

    Regarding the torque value, if I remember, I got the torque value from Modena Motors (France)
