Happy Holidays to all !!! A few months ago I test drove a wonderful red/tan 328 GTB with 17k miles on it but the owner wanted much more money than I could afford. He wanted $54k to be exact. Since then, I have seen the car on Ebay never meeting its reserve with a starting bid of $40k. Some people have placed a bid or two but never going above $42k. There is another black/black 328 GTB currently on Ebay (not nearly as nice) which is also failing to attract the money a GTS commands. Some thoughts on my comments and price differences between GTBS and GTSs would be greatly appreciated.

In my experience, GTB's sell for the same as GTS's. I have many records of sales. The 17K car you refer to did sell to another Fchatter. There is a black '86 that has been on the market most of the year but have heard from a couple of reliable sources it is pretty beat. An 87 red.cream just sold allegedly to Continental motors in Chicago. There are a number of people looking for GTB's. I get unsolicited offers for my 89 every so often. For a nice 87-88 with 30K miles and a fresh major, expect to pay mid 40's and be ready to travel and act quickly.

Late year GTBs are very desirable and may even be selling at a premium over GTSs. I think only 20% made are GTBs.

Worldwide there the ratio of GTS/GTB is about 6/1. In the US (thanks to magnum PI) the ratio is much higher, more like 12-15/1. There were about 40 89's imported and (after much research) I estimate there were about 130-150 for all 4 years.

Dave, Do you have any idea if the gentleman selling the GTB in Florida got anywhere near the $54k he was asking for the car? The car was in great shape except for some leather shrinkage in a small place around the center console. It also had after market rims. Thanks for your insight.

I thought you were talking about the 88.5 that sold recently, same miles. I don't know if the FL car sold. Personally, I would not give any value to the aftermarket wheels. I would guess that car should sell in the high 40's if it's as nice as the description and really needs nothing.

OEM wheels are required, to get top dollar....

The market for GTBs is almost a seperate one from GTSs, IMO. Folks either want one or the other........

As stated keep looking and be ready, no time to mess around.......I'm at the other end of the GTBs, tire kicking on a couple of '76, '77 non cat cars...they are out there but most have some issues..

    Good luck...

Some of the 328s I've seen look like brand new cars, comparatively. You'll have to pay the 'ask' dollars on these to get 'em....

I believe the FL car is an 87, It also has the original rims. The after market rims are the ones that some ferrari fanatics love....I think they are Speed Lines. I like to keep cars stock but that 328 looked fantastic with those massive rims. They might indeed add some value to the car as they set the owner back some $6k including the tires.

It doesn't matter even if the rims set him back $20,000, he is actually hurting the car value, if he wants more $$$ for his car then he should get the stock wheels back in the car and Ebay the aftermarket wheels.

I agree the market is separate for GTS and GTB. Depends on one's personality. Open vs better structural rigidity etc. There is just something inherently great about the build quality of 328s. So many still look new even with alot of miles. When judging in concours, almost every one seems to be a platinum. My GTB has 52,000 miles and still looks new. Because of the rarity of GTBs, I wouldnt value them any lower that the GTS in comparable condition. I think there is an unneccessary premium ($10,000) on the 89s. When you find the right one, who cares if you may have paid a little too much... you may have saved it in the long run. Condition is more important than saving a few bucks.

Having had 3 308's and 2 328's, I can second Dan's contention that 328's do hold up better, both cosmetically and mechanically. I do love 308's, too.

    A couple of random comments:
I can say from experience putting about 40K miles on GTS's and GTB's that the B's are much better driving cars. Some will tell you it only matters at the track. I would contend the difference is actually much greater in everyday driving. I have tracked both types as well.

I had 17 inch speedline wheels with 225 & 245 tires on my GTB for a while. I think it had a little more grip but the extra unsprung weight (about 5lbs per wheel) was really noticeable and the car actually drives much nicer with the stock wheels and tire size. The extra bouncing can't help shock/spring life either. I am guessing that FL car drives better with stock wheels/tires. Those 225 and 255's he put on are way more than the car was engineered for. If you are interested in that car, tell him to keep the aftermarket wheels and work a deal w/o them.

If you really want a GTB, be patient, they are worth the wait. It took me 18 months to find the right one for me.
