So I've been trying to reach consensus without much luck on whether the roof spoiler on my car is correct. 1.5 points were docked at the 2010 Annual Meet (car still took home a Platinum) because the spoiler has texture. Judges argued that textured spoilers were mated to GTSs to match the Targa top, not GTBs. GTBs should have a smooth spoiler. I have no reason to believe that the spoiler was ever changed...

My car is an early production 328 (11/85) so I'm wondering if left over 308 parts found their way onto the car during assembly. My side view mirrors also have the earlier 308 trapezoidal inserts (w/ text) on the bases; I've noticed that later 328s do not have text molded into the plastic.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Len,

I'm in no way qualified enough in matters Ferrari to go against what the judges have said, but I personally believe that the smooth spoiler was not specifically made for the "B", but for any car, B and S, that the future owner has ordered with a body-colored spoiler.
Makes sense, as it is easier (and prettier to the eye) to paint the smooth spoiler than the textured one.

My 328 GTS has a smooth spoiler which is painted body-color (Nero metalizatto in her case) and it is smooth as glass.
I guess our English friends should be able to confirm this very quickly, as most of the GTS in the U.K have the body-colored spoiler, and these are smooth.
(In France, very, very few 328s were ordered with a body-color spoiler; mine is an ex-german market car)

My 328 GTB has no spoiler at all, because she has been ordered without the spoiler, but all GTBs that I have seen with body-colored spoiler have the smooth one.

I would not stretch my neck too far on this, but I guess that whenever the spoiler is left natural, i.e black on a GTB (= not painted) it should be textured.

Thoughts on this, other members? (Rifledriver knows, maybe?)

Yes, it would look strange, I think, painted and with texture...

Well, Ranger Ric above says that he has a "B" with a smooth spoiler; so does this mean that:
    - the textured one is only for GTSs that have the spoiler left black, not painted.
    - and that all other cars cars, GTS with painted spoilers, and GTB whenever painted or black, have the smooth one?
I'm not absolutely 100% sure, but I seems to recall that I have seen "B"s with the textured one.

I don't think this is a question of year of production; my "B", even if also a '89 as the one of Ranger Ric, is useless in that case as ordered without spoiler; by a twist of fashion, in France at least, most of late production "B"s were ordered without the spoiler, as if it was out of fashion at the time.

    B = smooth spoiler

    S = textured spoiler

    Same on QV

Earlier parts books specified but later books figured you already knew that.

1.5 points was a pretty big deduction for that.

Many spoilers were added after production and many have been changed. Whatever was available was usually installed so a lot of cars have the wrong one.

When we received the cars new it was as I said above.

Was there a blonde woman on the judging team? I think my wife was a 328 judge that year and she knows to look for that.

    Thanks, Brian.

But it do seems that all the cars (either B or S) seen with the painted roof spoiler ("body color aerofoil", as say the brits) have the smooth one...which, as already said, makes sense as it would not be very relevant to paint the textured one?
By the way, am I mistaken in believing that very few American Markets cars seem to have the painted roof spoiler option? Whereas it is very common in the UK and Germany; but not here in France...

On the QV B I've seen it both ways. On my 85 QV B it is textured and came that way new. I know for sure because I'm the original owner.

    Except for when painted presumably.

Although not relevant to the OP, what happened to the textured spoilers when they changed the type of texturing on the roof in (I think) mid-88? I cant remember seeing an 89 328 with the later roof and non-painted spoiler.

The roofs changed from having a kind of leather-look grained pattern to a smoother textured finish.

    Andy,

You would probably easily find a 89 here with a non-painted spoiler: the painted spoiler is very, very rare on french cars. Don't ask me why, because I don't know.
Among 328 enthusiasts here, a car with a painted spoiler is considered as very probably of foreign origin. Perhaps the french importer, Ch. Pozzi, didn't offered the painted spoiler option in the days?

89 GTS still have spoilers most of the time; as for the "B"s, the spoiler was "out of fashion" for the late-production cars.

So did they change the texturing of the 89 non-painted spoiler to match the changed texture of the roof or was it still the older style leather-grain finish (which would not exactly match the roof).

The parts book actually distinguishes between textured and smooth?

My 1986 328 GTS has a smooth roof and a smooth spoiler. Both are finished with what I would call a near-mat or "semi-gloss" surface, but both are smooth with no "texturing." The roof on my former '78 GTS had distinct texturing in it, but not the 328. Both the roof and spoiler are black, by the way.

All the Bs I've seen (maybe 10) had smooth spoilers. However, it seems like nothing is ever set in stone when it comes to Ferraris so I would not be surprised if some were delivered with texture. I'm sure if they happened to run out of smooth ones, Guido would happily attach one with texture.

1 thing I should mention is My car was ordered with Metallic black paint, so maybe while it was being painted a textured spoiler appeared during assembly?
