328 GTS ignition problem

I have a 1988 GTS which has been running fine until today. My problem is that the ignition key won't physically turn to the III position. Battery is OK. Steering lock is free. Both my keys have the same issue...They simply cannot physically be turned to the starter position. There seem to be a solid resistance of some kind.

Anyone know how to sort this out?

Any advice on how to dismantle the ignition/steering lock mechanism if that is necessary?
