My 1987 328 has been hard to start when its warm for some time. It always strarts right up when its cold. Once is has gotten warmed up and I have driven it, I have to give it gas in order for it to start. What could be causing this? I have played around with the fuel mixture (both lean and rich) but it makes no difference. Also, when I turn off the car, it always has a slight backfire or pop. What could cause this and are the two related? My catalytic converter was gutted several years ago but it did not happen right after this. This is a new engine and the only thing from the old engine is the fuel injection so I believe its related to this. Thanks.

Reluctant starting when warm can be a bad check valve in the fuel pump -- the pressure bleeds off the injection system and there's no cold start to help.

Dunno if the backfiring would be related. Maybe the injection is spraying a bit too long after the ignition stops.

You might check system pressure after turning off, if you have a handy CIS pressure checker.
(I have one over here in NoVA, but I still don't know if I'm going to be working this weekend.)
