I've had what I believe is a common problem in that my hazard switch pin bent and the hazard lights would just spontaneously come on. I took the switch apart and straightened the pin and it would stay down.

However, now the left turn signal works and the right doesn't. I've tried re-seating the switch to no avail. I fear I screwed something up in disassembly or reassembly.

Any ideas on what to test before I replace the switch?

Any ideas on a less expensive alternative ($400+ for the OEM $250 for a surrogate)? I've heard bmw used a similar switch. This the one?

I searched before I posted, but if I've missed the answers, forgive me.

    Regards,

    Ron

This is the 328 Hazard/Turn Switch Circuit. Knowing the right and left turn should work identically, I hope this will provide a clue to which part of the hazard switch to tweak. Note that hazard pin 5 & 6 come from the left/right turn sw, that is the first point to focus. If needed I could pull the wire colors...(taken from Fig 6 of the 328 Wiring book).

Unfortunately (or is that fortunately ;)) there is no flaw in the hazard switch on a 328 that could cause one side of the turn signals to not work (front, rear, and dash), but allow the other side of the turn signals (front, rear, and dash) to still work -- i.e., if something in the hazard switch was causing one side to not work, the other side wouldn't work either.

Can you get access to the 6-pin connector of the turn signal switch? The 328 wiring architecture is such that only a problem at the turn signal switch (or its connector) could cause the symptom that you report (and, if you can get to that connector, you could use a jumper wire simulate a working turn signal switch and see if that's where the trouble is).

PS When you turn the hazard switch "on" -- do both sides flash together correctly?

Yes, when on, both sides flash. In the stalk unit then?

No chance there are separate relays for left & right?

Have to say "very likely" (unless your car has some non-stock modifications). Don't know your model's interior well, but the connector might be sort of underneath and to the left of the steering column. If you can access the connector, there are some very simple jumper tests that will help confirm/deny (I'm a big fan of measuring/knowing BEFORE buying).

Unfortunately not. Everything upstream (+12V power and the flasher) is common to both sides -- the stalk switch is just a simple SPDT switch (with center "off" position), as Paul posted, that selects either the LH bulbs or the RH bulbs.

My weekend project is to dig into the steering column then...
