    Hi Guys,

The drivers side (lhd) headlight on my 328 won't de-pop. The light stays off so it is not a battery issue, and the other one pops up and down fine. Any ideas? I look a bit one eyed at the moment. The lamp works.

    Thanks,

    Marc

I had that happen to mine, the motor kicked on and was trying to run all the time. You could feel a vibration in the fender. Turned out to be a relay that went bad. A couple of bucks and a couple of minutes fixed the problem for me.

My opinion is that you have to check your headlight relay's .and switch them with each other and look what will happen.

    Marc,
check your Owners Manual on page 20 till 22 and remove the fusebox cover
thats no: 26 and above the fuses you will see the relay's. swap relay no: B with relay no: E they are the same. and look what is going on, mabe now your l.h.lamp is staing up, that maens the relay is not good.

I think you might have a bad diode in that motor--I replaced my diodes some years back on one of my dancing headlights--I have an 84 Qv FYI--
The original post for this was by Ric Rainbolt
    1 Disconnect ground
2 Remove the motor connector wire/you might have to remove the top grill for access
3 use the hand crank knob to lift the motor up slightly
4 use a volt meter to to check conductivy on the black and grey wires-MEasure with the meter and then reverse the leads and check again/If you have a meter with a diode check feature,in one direction you will get infinity<no reading> and in the other youll get a low value<less then one volt>
If you are using a meter without a diode check feature, select a low scale range<1-3 ohms> In one direction you should get get a low reading and in the other a fairly high or infinity reading--
5 Now check the other diode as in the previous step--This time use the black/green wire and the black wire--Note that both diodes share the common black wire
6 If all is well you should have made 4 measurements-Two will show a low value and two should show a high <or infinite > reading--If any pair shows low value in both directions the diode is shorted and needs to be replaced---If any two show a high value, the diode is blown and needs to be replaced
7 If either diodes need to replaced, you will need to remove the motor

Removing the motor and diode replacement

1 Remove the drive lever and the 3 bolts
2 Peel back the rubber boots-Only the lower needs to be peeled back
3 OnThe lower part of the mechanism, below the motor on the gear housing you will find a pair of diode rectifiers, small cylinders, usually black with a white or silver stripe at one end with two metal leads coming out of it--Use a low wattage soldering iron and remove the bad diode or diodes-MAKE SURE TO NOTE THE ORIENTATION OF THE DIODESBEFORE REMOVING THEM_MAKE A SKETCH OR TAKE A PICTURE_
4 Take your diode to the electronis store -Exact specs are not that critical as al as the the part is used for is a signal to the relay--FInd a rectifier with at least a 1 amp rating and a minium of 50V A N4001 is a good choice---
5 SOlder in the diode and recheck your readings as original diagnosstics steps
6 reconnect and test--Since the motor was half open the lamp will close or open when you reconnect the ground, so be alert about that-Dont get your hand in the way or ouch to you and your fingers

Hope this helps--I am not an electrician or a computer guy but I did this procedure on my car and it saved me a the cost of a new motor
When you bye the diodes , bye several extras, they are very cheap-Dan

Ok so I switched the relays with no effect, so that's not the problem. I wound down the lh headlamp no problem, and now when I switch them on, they both pop up and come on, when I switch them off, the rhd one goes down leaving the left one up, both switch off. So the motor works one way!

    Any ideas?

Interested to know how you get the Headlight to go down, I started the car over the weekend and had the same problem on the passenger side.
