I'm having a problem with the headlight switch on a 1988 328. The solder joint on one of the contacts broke (not uncommon I'm told). I've fixed that but after reassembly it's seems to send an intermittent signal to the lights. They will pop up and down or do nothing at all when the switch is turned. When I took the switch apart I caught the ballbearing and reinstalled it in the switch but I've seen previous posts referencing a spring inside the switch as well. I didn't see one nor can I see where a spring would fit inside the switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a picture. I should have taken one.

The spring is up against the ball, acting as a detent to keep the switch in its rotated position. Get a ball point pen, remove its spring, cut to size.

A lot of times the solder on the wire inside the stalk twist knob comes loose, you should check that first.

This a photo of a twist knob with the "V" contacts. Sometimes the plastic is white. You can see where the wires are soldered. The detent ball spring fits in the hole with the ball on top. Use some grease to hold the spring in the hole and the ball on the top. When reassembling the knob, look inside and find the groove for the ball. Line it up. You can also align a molded line on the twist knob with an etched line on the stalk. Once assembled, there should be a definite on/off action and the twist knob should stay in position and not creep. Use a multimeter to check the on/off continuity with the green and black wires. Sometimes the bend on the "V" needs adjusting. When the knob is installed there is a plastic "bar" molded into the end that spreads the contacts to separate them (off position). When rotated the "bar" is between the contacts and they make contact (on position).

Joe, IIRC, I think the the switch is normally close and when you twist it to on, it opens the contact and the headlights pops up but I'm not 100% certain.

We may be getting hung up on the wording. I'll try to check my switch in relation to the "bar" position and contacts.

Basically a pretty simple set-up. When the knob is in the off position the "bar" spreads the contacts apart. When the knob is turned to the on position, the "bar" is now parallel to the ends and the contacts close and the current is sent to the headlights. Sometimes you have to tweek the bends of the contacts to get them to spread or make contact. When you remove the knob, just cup your hand around the knob to catch the ball, also open it up over a cardboard box lined with a towel of newspaper. Good luck.
