My 328 just started a high-pitched squeeling noise coming from the passenger side of the engine. As I accelerate between 2500 and 4500 rpms I can hear the noise echoing off of walls, fences and other vehicles from my right ear. If I'm cruising at a constant speed or slowing down there is no noise. Sounds like metal, kind of like those minimum brake pad indicators when they start touching the rotor. There is no apparent change in performance. When I'm not in gear and I punch the gas pedal it may or may do it, but is much more quiet. Could it be a water pump starting to go?

I would check slipping belts first. A belt that isn't tight enough will slip at higher rpm.

My water pump belt squealed at high RPM a few times before the water pump seized. I would check the water pump and belt tension.

My 85 308 squealed when cold only then went away, found the alternator belt way loose after 1k on major service, was new and will stretch a bit for the first few hundred miles. Check these first. Bit of a job, I took the wheel off and the inner liner as I had no hoist.

Belt probably just needs to be tightened. If it does it when cold (like on start-up) and when you prod the gas, or when you have the vent blower on, it's probably just the tension. When the temp outside is cold, belts squeal a little more easily. In fact, leaving the Italian car show yesterday, my 328 did the same dang thing. I'll retension it this week.

When was the last waterpump rebuild? Sounds like a belt problem like others of said, though.

Thanks to all for the great feedback. I will check the belts, etc. and get back to you with an update. The noise appears to occur when it is hot and cold. If I am low on transmission/gear oil, could that make a high-pitched sound? Thanks again!
