I was chatting with my paint/body guy about fixing the damage done to the hood (front compartment) panel when the shipper tried to close it without pushing in the pin (ARRGGH.)

The question is: are 328 hood panels hand-made to fit each car? In other words, will it be cheaper to buy a straight hood from another car and shoot it, or will that have unequal gaps to my car, so will he need to try to fix the cracks/bends/breaks in the current one?

The body guy is incredible (you might have seen his green Miura that won three years in a row at Concorso Italiano in Monterey.) He just didn't know off-hand about if another 328 hood would fit perfectly.

I suppose this also the time to go to a later gas strut -- anyone know who has the best price/availability?

    Thanks,
    sam

How bad is the damage?...can you post a photo?...
I had a 308 & the front bonnet was damaged by a dealer, it was fixed but the dent was minor...

should be cheaper to fix it. i looked into this. apparently all the new ones come with the small thin "finger" next to the driver's side window wiper comes bent up from shipping. that usually has to be fixed, then the cost of the new one and repaint. cheaper to fix and repaint the old one. i think i was quoted around 1k.

I had my 328 fixed by Gary Bobileff here in town (shipper screwed it up). It was WAY cheaper than to get a new hood (I want to say $175 if I remember correctly). This included welding in a small reinforcement (you REALLY have to know these cars to notice it, so unless you are shooting for Concour winner at a Ferrari event, I would not worry about it.) Gary stated that if you did not do that it would crease again at this weak point. The repair is not noticeable, except for this reinforcement. The hood was repainted inside and out (inside may have been a touch up job, but you cannot tell).

I put in the later hood strut at the same time, kept the original one. Although no one touches the car but me, I put it in for peace of mind. You never know who might try to close the hood when you are not looking.

Paul Hoey (my autobody expert friend) took one look at the factory support structure and where the bend/breaks were and saw an opportunity to close up those holes put in by the factory (he said most likely the holes were required to insure the hood would crumple under impact to satisfy American crash regulations.)

I'm definitely not going for true concours -- just want it to look good to 99.8 percent, not the .2 percent of 328 experts.
