Hi all. I posted this in the 308/328 section and maybe it should be here. I am getting ready to replace the ignition wires and extenders on my 328 and like timing belt changes ( daily to several times a year) opinions vary. Taylor 8mm wire set #70253 seems to get a lot of press however other sources have cautioned against this wire. Resistance, ecu cross talk etc. I own my own service shop for Corvettes etc and this never seems to be an issue. I realize oem Ferrari are 7mm and the resistance is so many ohms/ft. Would anyone care to share their opinion on this ? Thanks, Steve
If you are planning to rebuild the OEM wires, the internal wire must be 7mm because 8mm wont fit into the connector caps. But using a third-party set of complete wires would be OK as long as they are resistance types with spiral-wound wire, not solid copper. The actual resistance is non-critical. The resistance varies greatly from cylinder to cylinder anyway as it depends on the length of the wires. On the OEM wires it varies from around 5K ohms on the short wires to 10K on the long.
Thanks. I forgot about the 1mm difference re the caps. I agree about "3rd" party wires. As long as they are spiral and not copper core then I'm ok here. I will ask my supplier if 7mm wires are available from the likes of Taylor etc... The semi confusing part was the resistance vs length. Maybe I have suffered from what we call "paralysis from analysis"... Steve
I had gotten a set of Magnacore 7mm wires for an '84 Mondial QV that I had a number of years back. They worked great. They even came with a set of new caps for the spark plug holes. The only problem I had with them was that the caps fit the holes too tight, and they would pop out when the engine got hot. I had to punch a little hole in each of the caps to relieve the pressure and keep them from popping off. Once I did that, they were great.
