I know I've seen a few people here with the Motovanti intake tube on their car and I'm thinking about getting it for my '86 328. Can I get some opinions on if this is a worthwhile purchase? Were there any noticeable differences (outside of asthetics)?

    Thanks,

    Chris

I am in the school of doubters on this one. It looks great for sure, but I seriously doubt it makes any more HP. Furthermore, I worry that it doesn't allow enough flex at the joints for the engine movement. There is a REASON Ferrari used a big flexible hose in there.

i made my own, bought the bent pipe from burns stainless and the silcone hose from hose techniques. cut the pipe with enough gap and used the silcone hose, the flex is minimal and the silcone flexes a bit.
total cost was an afternoon and about $90 in parts.

I don't know if its true but Motovanti says its a 34% flow rate gain, Hmm!

    Scott,
I'm curious as to a before and after dyno on this. If it really gives HP gains, a lot of people would get one, in search of every last bit of HP that can be squeezed from a 308/328.

I've had mine installed since i bought the car. I changed it out for looks not for HP. After install I could not tell the difference in performance and have not had any problems with the rigidness. From a design standpoint, I think air can flow more smoothly through the steel tube than through a snorkel hose. Lee

Thanks for the input guys, as Birdman pointed out I too was concerned about flex, but I also can see where Lee is coming from. I shot a PM to HuskerBill also, he swapped out his original for the pipe. SMG-I don’t have the tools or talent to make my own :)

the only tool you'd need is a hack saw. the pipe is aluminum and already mandrel bent. the legs on the stock peice were 6" i trimed them down. you could also use a large chain pipe cutter for a clean fast cut.

i don't have pre/post dyno numbers. this mod comes in handy though as i fab up the supercharger as the stock intake tube would not handle 10psi effectivly.

i have one i am not using, went with CF version instead. Forget what i paid, but call it 75% of whatever he is asking for a new one (plus shipping) and i'll sell you mine. It has never been installed, in new condition, etc.

    PM me.

Reread the posts about the Motovanti (from earlier discussions that eventually exonerated the 'flex' issue as a non-issue based on silicone hose movement being greater than 'designed in' engine movement). If you still disagree with that, so be it. I'm sure we'll hear about it.

We built a few dozen of the Motovantis as purely a sideline and never once had one returned for any flex or quality issues. (We did swap one unpolished one for polished as I recall). And yes, it is the same price as the CF unit, so that's a personal choice there. To me, the aluminum looks more 'at home' in the somewhat vintage engine bay, but again, totally personal call.

I think the flow issue has been covered well too, but just to clarify - - if you consider that the kinked turn of the corrugated tube is 2.2" and the full flow of the Motovanti OR Carbon Fiber tube is a consistent 3", that'll yield the 34% increase mentioned.

I have no 'perfect' new MVs left, so the offer of the one at 75% of original is a generous offer if you want one. I DO have 4 slightly imperfect ones that have either a small surface ding or something else I didn't like. Anyone who wants can get one of these for less than half ($59+9) and I'll still honor the 1 year 'buy it back' warranty if you don't like it.

Just PM me and I'll take it from there.

Anyway, it's great that this board is so very enthusiastic about the loveable 308/328/Mondial and continually seeks improvement to them. I love 'em too and yes, am still in the hunt for another one (328).

    Have fun with your cars.

Wow, that is VERY honerable and most impressive. 500 Positive Kodo points to you! Will PM you. For me it came down to weight basically. Engine moment is a nonissue as the engine here has a custom adjustable stabilizer bar with hard poly bushing on the trunk side due to the high track use. Will PM you.

Again, 500 Positive Kudos and your product is excellent.

Now THERE'S a man watching his weight! 7 ounces versus 3.5! I didn't know if Showtime (to whom you offered the Motovanti at a discount) was going to take it or not. Makes no difference to me, either way.

So, I'll refund you and now I do have a perfect one for my own car. Things just work out. I got two PMs on the 'slightly imperfect' ones so those are about gone too.

    Thanks again.

I gave the "thumbs up" to ShowTime with the Motovanti when he asked. As someone who can appreciate a good 328 mod, this is one of the better ones I have done.

It got a LOT of looks, photos, and questions from the crowd that gathered around it at the Concours at the Road & Track Concours d' Elegance at Road America this past weekend.

A LOT of people were liking it. I had the old hose to compare. And, by the way, hose flex is NOT an issue with this setup. In fact, I would be willing to bet that this system is has MORE flex than my hardened old hose.

WOW looks like I started something :) I appreciate the offer on the CF unit, but I'm going to pass, call me crazy, but I can’t justify putting CF in a 20 year old car. Thank you everyone for your input.

Adams, Thanks for the intake, I installed it this weekend, it took about 5 mins, looks great. I think the 328 ran a bit cooler also. :)
