One more data point. I switched fom Dino oil to Mobile One 15w-50 and now two weeks later I have not seen a single leak.

I read somewhere once that if a Ferrari isn't leaking, it's out of oil.

But seriously, why do you suppose it would make a difference?

There are a whole lot of earlier threads where many owners caution that going to a sythetic oild will result in oi leaks. Others say that isn't so. I am in the latter camp and thought that I would let people know of my recent experience.

Last time my 328 was at the dealer for a service, they used Mobil1 15w40 instead of the Dino oil that I requested. I was very concerned about leaks, etc. based on what the doomsayers said and I expressed my fears to the dealer.

They offered to pick up my car, redo the oil change with Dino & return the car to me as well as credit me for the synthetic oil change. They also suggested that I try it for a while and, at any time, if I wasn't happy (leaks, etc.) they would stand by their offer to redo it.

Well, 6 months & lotsa miles later, not a single leak and the car runs a bit cooler than it did w/Dino.
    I have been converted!

My experience has been ----- If you're using dino oil and your car leaks a little, if you switch to synthetic, it will leak a lot more.

FYI, the 328 came from the factory with Agip SINT2000 oil, which IS a synthetic oil. In fact, I believe the word "sint" is synthetic in Italian. So, the question is why did you ever use dino oil in the first place?

If you use synthetic and your car starts to leak oil, fix the leaks! It's not supposed to leak regardless of the quaint axioms. Can I say that again? YOUR CAR SHOULD NOT LEAK OIL!

Yes, lots of Ferraris (and even more Lotus') leak. The seals and gaskets can require skill to put in right, and may be expensive to do. Oil is cheap compared to shop time, so I can see the practicality of just putting a pan under the car. I'm told there are even questionable designs in some Ferraris that encourage leaks. So if it doesn't leak with dino but does with synthetic, it's probably just a matter of time before the dino will leak too.

When I originally bought my previous 328, the dealer told me not to use synthetic because it would leak. I used it anyway, and , sure enough, a very slow leak appeared. It didn't bother me much. As an old euro mechanic friend of mine once told me, "It's just external lubrication." :)
