A simple oil change has turned into a project. The last person put on the filter so tight that the metal handle of the oil filter wrench bent. I then tried a filter wrench with the serrated arms which get tighter as you turn, the filter crushed. Next I will try a strap wrench that uses a 1/2 ratchet. Any suggestions on how to get this thing off.

    Thanks

I have had to destroy oil filters because of this. The best tool to use on a stubborn oil filter is a big pair of channel look pliers. But seeing as the oil filter is already crushed..try driving a large screw driver trough the filter, close to the base but not to close or you won't beable to drive the screwdriver all the way through because of the fliter thread. Then turn the screwdriver. This normaly works, but be very carful of metal shavings getting in to the filter housing. Once you have to old filter of clean out the housing completly and look for any metal. The check once more. Once you have make sure it's clean install the new filter and hand tighten only. Warm up car and then check the filter once more to be sure it's not leaking and your done. Good luck!!

I found on the internet that if you heat it up with a heat gun it will come off. I did that and it came off!

I had difficulty geting the filter off of my 308 once. I got a pair of those large pliers-type w jagged teeth filter remover from NAPA. It worked when nothing else would.

A handy set of (cheap too) tools to have around is a two piece set of strap wrenches. These are the plastic handle ones with a big rubber strap that you can adjust to fit on an oil filter. I keep the big one in the garage, and the little one in the kitchen for opening those pesky jars.

Here is an example of one, though this appears quite small if it has a max capacity of only 6"...but you get the idea http://www.softwareandstuff.com/tol_boasrpwrnch.html

Sears has them, as do Ace Hardware, etc.

I tried the "screwdriver through the filter" trick once, and it worked quite well. And if all thses tips don't work for you, 2 well placed sticks of dynamite should get the job done quite nicely.

Try a groved drive belt, preferably a fan belt. Wrap it around the filter and twist the belt to create a clamping force by tightening up on the filter when you turn/put pressure on the belt. This will avoid the potential catastrophe(sp) of a missed screw driver and hammer routine. Good luck and please let us know how you make out.

One trick I have used succesfully is to start the motor, them with the oil pressure assisting the filter should start turning, often by hand. Trick is... just start it turning, then shut the engine off, or get a ton of "kitty liter" to clean it up!
