I know this subject has been worn out, but I am about to change the oil in my 88 328. I have a few 'spot' drips (leaks) now. I am thinking of using Mobile 1 15W50 synthetic. Does anyone have any recent info, stories, or increased leaks due to synthetic oil?
    Thanks,
    Dla

My old 328 started to leak a little bit after I changed to the Mobil 1 15w50 syn but it was certainly not a worrying amount.

I switched to Mobil 1 15-50 from dino oil. Interestingly with dino oil it leaked a little oil. Now with Mobil 1 it does not leak a drop. This is contrary to what I expected.

The 328 came from the factory with synthetic oil, specifically Agip SINT2000. In fact, Agip SINT2000 should be specified in the OM as well as on a plate inside the engine compartment. You should note that "sint" is Italian for synthetic.

dhs9, how do you know Agip's SINT2000 is semi rather than full synthetic? I have several bottles of Agip SINT2000 10w40 and no where on the bottle does is indicate it is less than full synthetic.

    Please do your homework.
Search the Fchat & the 'Old FerrariChat Archives' for OIL in the subject. There are a dozen or so threads, each with 50 to 100 posts. Some of them by petrochem engineers.

I think you'll find more detail than you ever wanted to know about oil & 3x8s.
