I will give as complete of a rundown as I can remember.

I picked up the car to drive to my home about an hour away. The car had been sitting since about a week earlier for a short spirited drive. Before that it had been sitting since Sept to July. I believe during that spirited drive my Father didn't let it cool down long enough.

I picked up the car and did some last minute errands before I drove to Indy from my hometown. The car operated normally and came up to temperature normally.

I start driving to Indy and about 30 minutes into my drive I hear a hissing sound and try to figure out the source. I then see my water temperature gauge pegged at 250.

I immediately pull off the interstate and park it. The car is releasing coolant pressure out the back from the reservoir. I let it cool down and add water to the reservoir tank and it takes about a gallon of water and that filled the tank to about half way.

I continue to let it cool as I start making a plan of action. I consider staying at an apartment I have on the south side of Indy instead of my house on the Northside. I also considered towing it to a local shop that does our service.

When it was cool I started it up and drove to my old apartment and it came up to temp and didn't overheat. I then try to drive around and see if it will go past the 195 mark. It never did so I chose to drive to the Northside of Indy to my house. It was a 20 minute drive down a three lane highway and it stayed on the marker below the 195 marker. Then when I get into start and go traffic it goes to 195 and the fans kick on and don't go above.

I park it and after it had cooled down and settled this strange noise started coming from around the reservoir tank. It sounded like a low pitch raspberry or quack. I took off the the coolant reservoir tank lid and it goes away.

Sorry for the long read but does anyone have any ideas? Any possibility it was an air bubble?

I have an appointment tomorrow with a shop that does or service but was seeing if anyone had any experience with this. The car had been sitting a long time so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I just hope the engine is ok.

Air in the system that should be bled and/or a bad cap. I would replace the cap (cheap) with one rated at 1.1 bar, bleed any air out of the system and see what happens. Hopefully pegging the temp at 250 did not cause any damage.

My guess is a bad, weak cap.

Yeah the cap is OEM so I believe you might be right. I already have an appointment to fix the A/C that is scheduled for tomorrow and I will have to have bleed out the system.

Hoping it didn't do any damage being that high for ever how long. I really don't want to be responsible for that bill. Thanks for your response.

    Bad cap.

It happens a lot if you read back through the archives. I am on my 3rd or 4th one in 10 years & I think the current one is about to start to fail - I was under the car the other day & noticed a drip of coolant on the end of the overflow pipe.

Worth keeping an eye on and worth carrying a spare.

For your current issue, get a new 1.1 bar cap & just refill the coolant, bleed it at the radiator & the thermostat housing & then run it & keep an eye on the coolant level. You may need to bleed it a couple of times more butit should shift any air in the sytstem on its own over time.
