On two occasions recently when I started up the 328 after a couple of days idle there was a rattling noise, at first it seemed to be coming from the plenum area, but, on listening closely, it appears to be coming from the belt drive area. The rattle lasts for about 20-30 seconds and completely goes away...if the car is warm, shut down and restarted, it does not hapen...no problems with power, driving, etc. Its only happened twice in the last 10 or so starts. Sounds at first like something's loose, or a broken ball bearing in some housing..but its odd that it's only happened twice on startup only. Any ideas? Thanks.

Dare i say htis... it is normal. Happens now and then with a few guys here and it is basically a belt thing. If it goes away after a minute or so, no worries.

Thanks, that what I was hoping for..all belts are accounted for and, aside from the temporary rattling that soon resolves..no problems with power, sound, drive, heat, smell, etc..I've currently got about 7K miles on these since their changeout last May...they should be in good shape.

    Thanks for posting this question!

Mine has been doing that exact same thing, so I was wondering about it too. Service is up to date, so it seemed pretty strange to me too.

This is very common, usually the a/c belt. It will get worse when the weather gets colder, but nothing to worry about.

Though I agree with most that belts can, and do, make the noise you've described (and more often than not, it's generally the a/c compressor belt), mine was making the same exact noise (good description on the broken ball bearing sound), and I determined it to be a compressor bearing. I don't recall if it had to do with the compressor clutch or the bearing on the compressor shaft itself, but I was able to isolate it to the compressor by doing the following: crank it up, and with the noise still in play, spray some WD-40 in the area between the compressor clutch and the compressor body........the sound on mine immediately stopped.

Just wanted to mention this in case your sound is somethin more than just a belt noise (as mine was)

I had some rattle as described a couple of months back on my 328 and while poking around I fount that it was the air filter box vibrating. The noise was coming from the area between the bottom of the air filter box and the unit to which it connects directly below. There is a big ring that tightens the connection (about 8 inches in diameter) and I only realized it was making the noise after I held the air filter box and moved it up and down. There was some play that made noise only on certain RPMs. I simple tightened the nut on the big ring and the air filter box was secure and noise is gone. Hope this helps.
