Is there anything I should know before attempting to adjust the rear engine cover lid (like don't even try) before I attempt to loosen the three bolts on each side. The gaps are bad and it is difficult to open. I worry I will break the cable if I do not adjust it. Any thoughts are appreciated.

A safe way when doing this is to have one of the rear lights off on each side. This way you have access in case of problem.

+1 ask me I've been there, not a nice feeling to have to hack one of ur tail lights out.
On both hinges u will see 2 small to locating holes think there 1/8 loosen hinges whack to small Philips head screw drivers in there and tighten bolts do same on other side and you will be very close to where u wanna be, do remove one of ur rear lights good insurance.
    Good luck.

Thanks gents for the advice. This should be simple but these cars are giant Italian Rubic's Cubes. As best I can tell they don't require manuals but palm readers. Thanks for the help.
