After selling my 328 last year, I am now in a position to again acquire a 328. One thing I promised myself is that when I do so, I will drive it more often. Does the 328 have adequate rustproofing such that it won't rust when driven in the rain periodically? My previous 328 never did see rain so I don't have firsthand experience. Perhaps a better question is: how is the 328's rustproofing relative to other cars of the same vintage i.e. mid-80's Porsche 911SC/Carrera, etc.?

The 328 was reasonably well rust proofed by Ferrari standards but Italy does not use salt on the roads as opposed to the Fatherland that uses it in copious quantities.

If I were making a bet I would say that the German cars will be better in the rust proofing area but if you are not talking about salty roads I would think the 328 would be OK.

Thanks for the input. No salt, just Seattle rain...

    Also in Seattle here...

The 911SC's and Carreras have dipped galvanized bodies - so long as there hasn't been poorly repaired body damage these 911s are highly resistent to rust. That's in contrast to the earlier 911s w/o the galvanized bodies, particularly in the presence of salted roads or even proximity to the ocean and salty and humid conditions. I'm not sure if the 3X8s had galvanized bodies - I'm guessing not as that wouldn't be what comes immediately to mind to a QA designer sitting in 85 degree Modena....

Mike, you've probably checked out Ferrari of Seattle - my impression is that any 328 they may have/get will be at least $10K over FMV. That was the case about a year ago when one of the sales reps was pinging me with 328s they wanted to broker. In one case I know of, FoS offered a 328 via a brokered deal for $55,000 - I managed to find out the owner's name and he was willing to sell direct for $38,000! FoS wanted, and fully expected, to make $17,000 on that deal simply for making a few phone calls and detailing the car - that's b.s.

Sorry to say, but you are grossly mislead :(
In north Italy salt is as well a plague as in Germany. During winter, both main and B roads are white with salt almost every day due to very cold temperatures during night.
My 328 has been used even during winter and, as I always gave her a proper wash once back at home, rust has not been a problem. Even in this case, a lot is down to the owner attitude.
    Ciao

Per Keith Bluemel all 1984-on 308s and 328s have an "electrolytic applied zinc oxide" coating on panels where it is most needed.

You are correct I have been. I was under the impression Italy used no salt.

    Thanks.

Good to hear - commonly called "galvanized." Would be interesting to see how liberally this is covering the 3X8 body/panels. I know the entire 911 body (inc. all panels) is galvanized prior to paint.

Although this is anecdotal, I can say I have seen rust on 308's from 76-83, but not 84's or 85's. I've never seen rust on a 328. We see plenty of salt around here but most cars hibernate during those months. O/w this is an arid climate.
