My 328 has been leaving puddles of oil from time to time at the front of the engine sump cover so it looks like the shifter seals need to be replaced. On disassembly I have found the forward seal has the lip facing to the rear which is as expected, but the rear seal also has the lip facing to the rear. I have seen a thread saying the lips should be facing each other, so which way is correct. Is the seal keeping the gearbox oil out (lip to rear or the engine oil in (lip to the front) ??

The factory installed them with the lip facing the rear on both.
