Put my 328 away for the winter in November and a couple weeks ago smelled a slight wisp of gas and put a newspaper under the car just in front of the passenger side rear wheel. Noticed a couple of small spots of gas/grease on the paper but nothing more. Seemed that the problem went away as I picked up no more gas leaks for about two weeks. However I kept the paper under the car and this morning noticed that a sheet of newspaper was almost all wet from gas. The car has not been driven during the period between the gas on the two sheets of paper.

Any thoughts on why I would have an intermittent gas leak and where it might be coming from?

Temerature differences I think may account for the on again, off again leak. I'd check all the hose clamps on the fuel line first. If you can trace the leak up the car, obviously it will be easier to find.

    Russ,

I had the same experience. I walked into the garage and was shocked to find the 308 sitting in a large puddle of gasoline. On closer examination, the right tank had 4-6 holes in the bottom, about 1/8" diameter. I had stripped the tanks bare to repaint them, but still had not seen any evidence of existing or impending perforation. I would not think that your average name-brand gasoline would have components that would eat through aluminum. Combine that with the fact that the other tank was unscathed! I repaired the holes with epoxy. If I had kept the car, I would have installed a welded-in patch. This would also have allowed a thorough inspection of the interior of the tank. The epoxy became an adequate permanent fix, though.

If you suspect a tank leak, I would suggest, that after running the fuel level to almost-empty, that you take an awl and lightly probe the bottom of each tank, looking for impending perforations. Don't push hard enough to dent the tank, just hard enough to push through a spot that has been eaten-almost-through.

Take a good look to see if the large Al coolant line running diagonally across the front of the motor & down between the gas tank & alternator pulley is rubbing against the tank.

On the earlier 308s, the tube could rub a hole in the gas tank. I'm not so sure it's possible on the 328, as the 328 has a horizontal mounting strap channel that the earlier cars don't have.

Thanks guys for the as always helpful comments. The leak only seemed to occur when the temperature was in the teens. We are now having a warm spell with the temp over 30 and the leak has stopped. This seems to indicat that the cold contracts a metal fitting going into a hose and allows a small amount to leak out. Will try and get under the car and tighten all the hose clamps that I can find.
