My brakes began squeaking a while back, it's really gotten annoying. The pads in the back are new, the ones in the front have plenty of wear left. Braking fine, it just sounds horrible. The rotors are fine also.

Suggestions? Do I need to replace the pads again? I have Porterfield in the back, and don't know what's in the front as my receipts are elsewhere at the moment.

Did you put the brake anti-squeek glue/paste/gel/whatever it is on the back of the pads before you installed them?

turning the rotors might help if they have blue spots on them.

I worked my brakes over last year and have not had an issues since...

I had the rotors turned and had a set of small cooling grooves cut in them, then I used the EBC brake pad that was a long wear / low squeal pad ( I forget the part #). The feel changed a bit and I might not do this if you are looking for peak performance on the track but for me I was more concered with day to day driving than track days on this car.

The dealer telling me "they all sqeal" was not a good answer.

Brakes do not squeak from between the pad material and the rotor, they squeak from between the pad back and the piston(s). It's a resonance. The sound you hear is the pad vibrating back and forth over the piston.

Typical cures are pad grease, making sure the springs and/or clips on the pads are good and smooth rotors. Many cars also use thin metal shims between the brake pad and piston to help absorb the vibration.

Matt hit it on the head, I forgot to put in the anti-squeal stuff. Guess I get to take it back apart again.

Thanks guys for all the info.

    Tillman,
Take the pads and bevel the leading and trailing edges with a grinder. This will eliminate most squeals. Also make sure the pad floats freely in the caliper, so it never gets cocked. Anti-squeal as almost snake oil. It works a little sometimes, but it's a crutch for fixing the root cause of the squeal.

    Good luck,
    John

I forgot to mention this...is the ticket. The bevel makes a big diff.

I have not had LONG TERM luck with stop squeal stuff...it works for a while,(just my experiance)

Regarding the pad-piston vs pad-rotor ...I have found it can be one or the other / not always pad-piston. (just my experiance)

Tillman, what type of porterfields are you running? are they the r4s compound? if they are they are known to squeal. I had them on my 914 street/track car and no matter what we did to 'quite' them, it did not help. You may need to revert back to street pads and install the porterfields when on the track. that's if you are tracking the car.

Hard pads (i.e. race compound) squeal. The pads on my race cars used to squeal BIGTIME under light braking if they didn't have temp. in them.
Bevel the edges and give it a shot.

Me, I'm willing to deal with a limited amount of squeal to have solid, non-fading compound pads that stop whenever I ask them to. If anybody gives you any crap, just ask them if the pads squeal on THEIR Ferrari. That will shut them up.

This is the part number, it's the only one I was able to find in a timely manner

    R4S-FRP206 Brake Pad

I guess I'll live with it for now

at least give the snake oil a try. If the brake company's go through the trouble of putting it in the box, you might as well.....

Tillman, unfortunately you may need to live with the squeal. They are excellent pads though.

Used the anti-squeek gel, now they only make noise about half the time. Will try the beveled edge trick next.

I remember a thread (or numerous ones) about this a while back and concluded from what I read that the Porterfield pads were the cure.

Why not just get a set of those for the front? I have the same problem and that's what I'm thinking of doing.

Let me know what happens either way.
