I am *considering* pulling the engine out my 328 next winter. The insulation material on the firewall has had it (same at the rear of the engine bay) & while the thing is out I could replace all that & generally tidy the thing up.

In addition to that it would be very easy to do the belts, check the valve clearances, have a look at the clutch & it would seem to make sense to refurb/check the starter & alternator at the same time given that they are 20+ yrs old & fairly inaccessible

AFAIK these are bosch units but I think they are bespoke to the 328 (at least the alternator is). Does anyone know if you can just buy new & brushes regulators etc (or even a rebuild kit) for these things over the counter or do I need to take it to a Bosch "specialist" for a rebuild?

I just had the Bosch alternator for the 328 rebuilt by a local shop. It is just a plain old Bosch alternator. I had it done for me rather than fooling around with it myself, as a rebuild is not very expensive and the shop has all the right parts, tools and test equipment, and it took him very little time vs. the amount of time it would take me to do it. It came back to me looking better than new.

The Bosch starter is probably the same thing. I've had them on old Jaguars, and the rebuild guys just take them in and redo them, no big deal. I replaced the starter on the 308 with a hi torq starter and was very pleased. But if you want to stay original, just take it in to any decent shop that rebuilds starters, and I'm sure you'll find they can redo it for you inexpensively, as it is just a plain old stock item.

As with a lot of parts on these cars, just because it came off a Ferrari doesn't mean it is anything special. I just dropped the radiator from the 328 off for a recore -- no big deal. The shop said it would be done in a couple of days, standard price, no "F-car" surcharge. A radiator is a radiator, as the guy said, doesn't matter what it comes off of.

Had my radiator recored and a/c condencer cleaned and pressure tested for $459 last September. I was chasing an above normal running temperature problem that ended up being a lean condition as (my opnion only) after setting my FAR to 12.5 - 12.8 it runs cooler and pulls much better at the low end. Replace all the foam while your in there.

    Cheers
