Hi Team. I’ve searched and read most of the threads on the wobbly steering column bracket. Is there an actual fix to strengthen this area or at least reduce the flex? It sounds like all cars are different in terms of amount of movement. 1986 328 GTS.
Maybe replace the red steering knuckle, otherwise, I dont think there are any fixes that I know of, I have 104 K miles on my 89 , and the steering works fine, its always had a little flex, Im gentle at slow and hard 90 degree turns, other than that , Its never bothered me or had any negative effect while driving the car proper. Maybe your front tire air pressures can be upped a bit ? The 308 / 328 are directly connected to the road, so I believe the flex is normal with their design. Some folks, and I dont know why they bother, install some electric contraption to make the steering feel easier, a waste of time I say, you might as well sell the car if your to weak to steer it . Thank you
The steering column brackets mount to an "accordion" chassis structure meant to collapse in a crash. This accordion structure has some small tack welds that give it its rigidity, but are easily broken in a crash. You might check to see if all of those tack welds are still in place or if some have been broken. Just pulling hard on the steering wheel (like from getting in and out) could maybe break some of them. Also, if you see how they work, you could maybe add a few more to increase the rigidity of the structure. Just a thought...
Thanks, did a big road trip today and it’s generally fine except when cornering hard on rough roads. I’ll take a look under the dash and check out all joints when I’m back home. Thanks.
That could well be it, I need to take a look and have a wiggle under there to see if something is detached.
