Worrying about supers/turbos for this application is a waste of effort. Either will do the job; Superchargers are far easier to install.

    To add...

Sadly my intent to purchase the 928 supercharger immediately has to be put on hold again due to other expenses that just came up (Note that it's true that a boat is a hole in the water to throw money in and compared to a boat, maintaining an Ferrari is a real bargain). In any case, I'm hoping that I will be able to order the SC sometime this summer and install it in the fall. :(

I'm impressed with the responses from Carl at 928 re my questions - I had quite a few so I have no personal concern about the product or the results. It's the easiest and cheapest way to get a major HP boost other than nitrous which is MUCH cheaper and much easier but you have to find a place for the bottle and then pay to refill it - probably quite often! :)

I've been thinking about boosting my car too. Here are some observations.

Both superchargers and turbochargers will do the job. In fact, superchargers have been used on cars for over 100 years, gone in and out of favour over the time, coming back in ove the last decade or so, coinciding with better technologies. Today there are several different compressor technologies used. Also, turbos are better today than they were 20 years ago, with lag being handled better. In fact, some diesel motors use twin turbos, one small and one large - the small spooling quickly to decrease lag, giving time for the bigger, more grunty one to spool up and get going.

Certainly for our types of cars, I reckon superchargers are "easier" to fit and easier to reverse back to original if you wanted. And superchargers seem to avoid the lag issue, although today's turbos seem much quicker to spool up and so are less laggy, it seems.

From other threads I have read, you can quite easily and simply (maybe??) adjust the boost levels of a supercharger by fitting different diameter pullys until you get boost delivery to your driving liking. Not sure you can do this with turbos unless you fit a different size of turbo.

Also, you probably don't want to boost an already highly stressed motor (i.e high compression pistons, heavy cams) if you want it to last too long. I'm thinking of supercharging a stock, healthy 328 but I have already installed sequential EFI and a modern electronic management system to run everything, giving terrific programmability.

I also understand that a complete turbo installation would likely be more pricey than a supercharger installation, but I might be wrong.

Lastly, with Ferrari, the simple pursuit of extra hp is sometimes more cost-effectively achieved by buying a later model anyway - simple - or going to the dark side and buying Godzilla.

We need Mike C.'s comments in this thread.

He is a FChat mod and has installed one of the SC solutions in his QV and got tons of hp out of it. He went through some growing pains getting it right (his SC was like the prototype), but eventually it worked and made him really happy.

I'd love to hear Mike's comments after some years of usage.

When I built the SC system for my QV I built 2. Mine is now with Verell as I've moved to the V12 and I just got an email telling me the second is for sale. This is a whipple ax2300 screw type compressor, custom manifold with water/air intercooler built in and capable of deliverine 23/24 psi and making 550-600 hp, or it could be run down as low as psi and 360-400hp. You need to replace the valve spring to run it over 15 psi. If someone is in the market for an all out SC system, let me know and I'll put you touch.

Yep, here's the other one waiting for someone to finish it.............

I've changed directions on my project so I'm passing the baton along to someone who'd like to complete it. It's most of the bits needed to SC a 3X8QV. mk_e built the manifolds, which still need final finishing. I have a list of the bits and can provide more pics if needed.
For the nitty gritty of the install, mk_e knows the in's and outs for succsesfull completion.
Here's a "teaser" pic of the bits on my work bench. PM me if interested.
