I am going to replace the temp sender at the expansion tank on my '87 328. Does anyone know the cross reference part number that may be available at a local parts store? Taking the car out of town today and want to switch it before i go.
    Thanks,
    Dan

What temp sender are you talking about? The thing under the expansion tank is the warm up reglator thing, nothing to do with your temp gauge. The sender that feeds the gauge is burried down in the V of the engine underneath the plenum - not easy to get to!

I assume the warm up regulator. I keep having problems with the temp rising to 220 degrees before the fans kick on. I have changed the raditior temp/fan switch at the bottom of the radiator and bled the system of air as well as topped of the coolant. The radiator gets hot so I know that the fluid is circulating correctly. Not sure where to go from here.

Back to basics i think is the answer! How long has it been doing this, when did it start & did you do anything to the car before it started? You've changed the fan switch & so odds are you've ruled that out.

The question we have to find the answer to is whether it is actually runnning at 220 or not i.e. is that an accurate reading. Bear in mind that the fan switch that's cutting the fans on is down at the radiator whilst the sensor that's telling you what the temperature is is back on the engine so there is quite a distance between the two.

Its very unlikly that the fan switch is waiting till 220 to kick the fans in but that doesn't mean that the engine sensor isn't seeing 220. Possible causes could be a sticking T'stat or a failing water pump - or indeed a blocked radiator - or the gauge/sender could just be lying.

If you want to get some answers before you start changing bits then you need to measure some temperatures another way - the easiest would be with one of those infra red thermometer things. If you can get your hands on one of those then you can spot check temps all over the system & start to get some indication as to what's really happening.

    Hope that helps
