Actual numbers from Manheim auctions, for the past 7 months. Add $7K or so for dealer mark-up. Only "above average" cars are listed. 1986-1989 328's, 1989-1990 348's:

    328's

    miles sales price

    46K $31.5
    7,600 $55K
    18,500 $36K
    18,300 $38K
    30,500 $41K
    55K $27K

    348's

    miles sales price

    47K $36K
    21K $47K
    19,600 $47K
    12,726 $47K
    28,000 $49,500
    30,000 $46K
    30,000 $44K

    CONCLUSIONS:

If you throw out the "high" and the "low" for each, the average sales price is
    $36,625 for a 328, and $46,200 for a 348. Not quite $10K difference.

I have a feeling that 47K miles car was that disasterous car I bought from Premier Auto. If its an 89' and red/black then it is probably it. I would throw that car out and then the next lowest because of the condition of the interior was probably much worse on that one then all the others....thus the price reflecting more of the condition then the miles...

That's exactly why I threw out the lowest and highest. When we OWN a certain car, it's easy to be too optimistic about its value by focusing on outliers on the high end. When we're SHOPPING for a certain car, we tend to focus more on the outliers on the low end. So if you throw the high and low outliers out, you have a more accurate picture of market values.

Those look like strong prices. How does the average this time compare with last year?

I'll take a look and get back with you on that. BTW, 348 spiders were NOT included in these #'s.

very true, and a very good way to look at it. So what would you guessimate the average 348 is worth in the average buyers market....

Those numbers look good on paper--Now go and find a GOOD car, decent miles, the right color for you, and within a reasonable distance. I am sure those numbers will NOT hold up.

Very true. In the UK at any rate, finding a 348 spider in the right condition and colour etc is very difficult. I found that sellers can pretty much name their price for a mint car :(

Those numbers are ok in the States. In Italy a good 328 has asking price of an average 348, if not higher. Market is really different depending of where you do your shopping.
Here after the translation of the quotation as given by Ruote Classiche (Classic Wheels), the most influential magazine of classic cars in Italy.

The numbers aren't intended to "look good" or "look bad". It's just information. I'm not sure what you mean as to "those numbers will NOT hold up." ???

I was thinking the same thing, although almost immediately after I started looking I tossed the "reasonable distance" limitation. Ferrari's are too rare to stick to the surrounding counties.

My experience has been that, when you're looking to buy (as I am, though a 308 or 328), you can only use these prices as a guideline and not a rule. Before I bought my 993 - which is admittedly much more common - I looked at a few that had minor issues, and I negotiated hard on those. When The Perfect Car came along, I paid high market value for it because I knew that the time I'd spend finding another like it, in the colors I wanted, wasn't worth knocking another couple thousand off the price. With a 328 or 348, they're harder to find and I would use the prices quoted on f-chat only as a sanity check, not some kind of stone tablet of Ferrari values.

    My two lira...

Thanks. The Spider prices are more in line with what I'd expected. I wonder if convertible prices are historically more stable? Flat or increasing values in this area are fine with me, too. Perhaps the 348 has already seen its bottom.

Meaning in REAL world situations--like actually buying a car--those numbers are going to be LOW. I can find 328's all day long for 35k--but would you really want to delve into a car with no records, no major service done, door dings from hell, cracked windshield. These are the cars you will find for those prices. Oh and then you have to have it shipped here from Bangladesh.

I believe these prices are “wholesale” prices from the Manheim Auction. Private sale or dealer prices are considerably higher as HuskerNtexas pointed out.

Still not sure I follow. I'm not recommending anyone "delve" into anything. It's just auction prices for vehicles rated "above average" by Manheim. No more, no less. Furthermore, Manheim does not have any operations in Bangladesh to my knowledge; each of these auctions is in the United States. There is no indication that any of these cars have or don't have "no records, no major service done, door dings from hell," and the like.

By chance, did you pay $20K over market for a 328 and are feeling badly about it? Just curious, as I otherwise can't understand the motivation of your posts.

Ahhhhh. Guess you did pay a $20K premium for a 328. See below post from archives. I suspected this from your earlier posts. Good luck though with the 328 - great car!

    1-I am getting that car
2-I am not paying the ASKING price of $57,500.00
3-I guess we are talking about different things when it comes to the prices and values.
    4-Have a wonderful day!

I think you're right about "prices and values". What is valuable to one person may not be to the next. My wife wouldn't give a plug nickel for my 348, but she sure likes those diamond rings!

Congrats on your new car. The 328 is a jewel.
