I consider buying a 328 GTS from 1987 which has the following VIN : ZFFCA20S0000XXXXX. I am very surprised by the presence of four "0" within the code. Can anybody clarify to me what this means ? Thanks
Ferrari doesn't make a lot of cars. In fact, for 1980s Ferraris you can identify a unique car with the last six digits. However, all car companies must use this universal VIN format, so 328s and Toyota Corollas end up with VINs of the same length. The zeros on the Ferrari are just because they only needed six digits and more recently seven.
See here: http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/vin.html That VIN indicates a Euro model 328. There are zeros in the ninth and tenth position that would normally be filled on a U.S. model with the model year designation and the VIN check digit.
