In my search for a 328, I'm seeing now several cars available. However, as I look at some of them, I notice the red paint on the intake which is alloy
(says "Ferrari 3200 quatrrovalvole") is noticable different in condition.

Several examples look to be original, all paint is there. Several examples have paint flaked off. One example on ebay has the intake repainted red, but its a crappy job.

    How come this flakes off?

I suspect its heat related, the hotter the engine has been, the more the paint "unbonds" with the metal and flakes off.

If this is the case, would this then be an indicator of the condition of the engine?

    Thanks for any advice

i have wondered the same thing. people with normal cars spray all sorts of crap on the engines to get them clean. the problem is that many cleaning agents no only corrode the aluminum alloy, but the rinsing off with water does not stop the corrosion or "wash" the stuff away. you must reverse the reaction to a chemically neutral state.

Simple Green corrodes aluminum, so do many of the "Gunk" type spray foam engine cleaners. the aluminum in the Chevy engines and the Japanese cars is a very different alloy than that used by any of the Italian manufactures. the older alloys are also very porous compared to more modern stuff less than 10 years old. i have used Dawn diswashing soap in hot water applied with a long bristle paint brush to clean the engines upper surfaces. water is applied sparingly in a mist. the undersides can be cleaned with a indirect pressure washer with a clean water rinse.

i swear the peeling paints on the older cars engines is caused more by people " cleaning " the engines, that due to age, heat and expansion of the alloys.

just my opinion, others may have better info.

Old school paint technology. The factory stuff back then was not up to speed on "sticking" to cast iron, let alone alloys.

POR15 and some of the new stuff has a lot more technology in the mix to make it more heat/chemical/time resistant than the old stuff.

Those with cars that aren't peeling have more than likely been resprayed with more modern stuff or taken care of a lot differently.

It's not a direct indicator of the condition of the engine, but it *is* an indicator of level of overall care the owner gives his car.

I had mine repainted when I first got the 308QV about 12 years ago, and have only needed to do small touchups with a paintbrush in a couple of spots since then.

The picture you show tells me the motor has been powerwashed. Probably more than once. The lettering on the air box is gone as well. Has no bearing on the condition of the motor. Some flaking is normal, even without power wash.

Also looks like some corrosion on the passenger side of the engine bay (?)

It looks like it has seen a bit too much water back there.

Just had mine repainted by a good friend in the UK.

I`m sure the flaking is cleaning chemical and possibly heat related.Plus the original paint did not seem very thick.Steve painted mine with some crinkle finish paint from here

    http://www.frost.co.uk/default.asp

The colour is slightly darker, but it still looks good.

Mine is also peeling, and it was worse after a powerwash of the engine, so really it was a mistake and I think this is the main reason of the peeling.

I´m thinking to paint it, does anyone know if the paint needs to be heat resistant or any special kind of paint?.

Ade, watching your engine´s photo i see lot of blue tubes. Are they the fuel lines? Have you changed yourself and is it easy to do? Are they original from Ferrari or can be bought others? I´m planning to change them and i´m not sure where to buy them.

    Thanks

All the blue hose is silicon hose, all the existing water pipes and some of the vacum pipes were old and cracking ,because you have to take the plenum off to get at some of them,a PITA job,i put the silicon hoses on and stainless clips in the hope of never having to do it again.I have changed all the water pipes, but still need to change some of the vacum and oil pipes over, thats one of the many winter jobs i have listed.

Obviously still a bit of tension between the two sites.

The story is on a UK based Ferrari chat forum.

Ignore the British humour in there...:)

Demon Tweeks sell it in the UK,amongst others, they are web based

Can't make out the lable for the red wrinkle on your link. However, From the color I thnk your friend used VHT wrinke red. It's commonly used for the Ferrari intake plenums & is darker than OEM. It's a heat resistant, self-priming/etching paint.

I've been using a bright red wrinkle powdercoat that's an excellent match for the OEM color. JWISE has posted pix of it several times.

As to the peeling, It's NOT a sign of abuse/overheading. Just age & washing, most likely pressure washing.
