How can I determine if my WUR on my '89 328 is faulty? I have a stumble when the car is cold. It runs great once warmed up, but when it's cold and I first mash the accelerator it hesitates. My first instinct says WUR, but I don't to replace it if that's not the cause. Suggestions?

There are many things that could cause a cold stumble- fuel filter, ignition wires, plugs, distibutor rotor/cap, auxillary air valve, injectors, faulty cold-start system, etc.

But, to check the function of the WUR, a complete fuel pressure test is required. This is probably (depending on your abilities) a job best left to the professionals. The test itself is not too difficult, but what to do with the results is a bit complicated.

But- if you are comfortable doing a full fuel pressure test on your car, just post the results and we can hopefuully help with them.

Here is a site by Carl Rose that tells about the test:

The fuel filter, ignition wires, plugs, distibutor rotors, were all replaced recently during the major service. That's why I was assuming something with the wur (or yes, the auxilary, cold start system, etc.).

Unfortunately, I don't have a professional in my area, so I "have" to be a DIYer. I say "have" because that's really the way I prefer it. Judging by the service I get in EVERY other aspect of Alabama life, I don't think I'd trust anyone else around here to wrench on my car. However, FI systems and controls is not an area I'm very familiar with. So I may have to enlist the help of "pros" on this one.

What part of Alabama are you in? If you are near the coast you could come by and I'll have a look. If not, Call me I can talk you through checking it and send you the specs on it. Another option is to find a good old independant Mercedes tech, he will have the pressure gauge you need and know how to test it. If you call me I probably can locate somone for you through the parts suppliers I deal with.

I'm in Huntsville....a long way from the coast. I do have one last resort here....a guy that works at Porsche/BMW who used to maintain a personal Ferrari collection in Florida. He'll come to the house, but all his tools are at the shop and then it becomes "I'll come back next week with tool A". More reason for me to get more tools. ;-) What I also need is a vacuum pump and gauges so I can overhaul my A/C system which is not functioning right now. Oh, and I need to get a ring nut socket to fix the horn wire that a local "pro" stereo installer broke. And on and on it goes.....

Much as Boeing keeps a backlog of aircraft orders so they are ensured work in the future...so too do I keep a backlog of maintenance projects so I don't run out of work in the future. :)

Call me I have an expert in your area. He is a Porsche guy, but very competent on CIS. I will contact him in the morning about your car.
