My ignition switch needs replacement. Looking through past threads, BMW part 61 31 2 682 120 from a 2002 model was identified as a a replacement. Has anyone had experience with using this part as it is available while the Ferrari part appears to be unobtanium?

I don't know about the BMW switch, but I can attest that a switch from a 400/412 works great, as I have one of those in my 89. Possibly also one from a Testarossa or Mondial.

I think MG also uses that switch you have to do a little research

Is the failure in the mechanical part or the electrical part or is all mising?
The electrical part can get damged by wrong liguids lubricants as they flow the spine shaft downed

FWIW, I disassembled/cleaned the Ign switch in my '89 328 8-9 years ago to sort out an intermittent connection problem and it's been fine ever since. So that might be an option if it's an electrical problem/depending on what's wrong.

I now think it is a mechanical problem. Initially, if I fiddled the white wires behind the switch the car would start. That no longer being the case, when I now turn the switch to the three position I don't feel the spring action and it won't start. So yes, I now think its mechanical. The long bolt that locks the steering wheel may put too much pressure on the mechanical side of the switch. Once its disassembled and we can fix the lockset if that is the issue I will also replace the electrical part with the BMW component.

    Dave,

I also have a 400 and I know that switch is identical to the 2002 switch. What first tipped me off was that the 400 key is identical to the key I had on my 2002 many years back.

Perhaps the back spring jump out of the retaineing hole?
You need to remove the lock and look perhaps before buying the new part - many questions here will be solved
