    Good day all

The foam insulation material lining the engine bay on my 328 has started to disintegrate recently. It spoils what is otherwise a pretty concours engine bay. Ferrari UK have advised that this material is no longer available as NOS - any ideas on alternative sources for the original panels or sourcing something equivalent?

    Thanks

    Ken

    Hi ken

I posted a thred just like this last week and the only thing i could come up with was some silver material from Deamon Tweeks, it isnt self adhesive so i would emagine that it is goint to be a sod of a job.

I have the same problem on my '89 GTB.
The insulation is starting to fall away from the rear bulk head and is generally making things look messy on an otherwise spotless car. I had a quick look from under and I think its going to be a nightmare to change with the engine in place.

My 87 328GTS has exactly the same problem, I see some aluminium foil insulation now for sale by the meter at the local builders / hardware store, that may be something that could be used, it would have to be glued in place. I was wondering about the adhesive insulating pads with aluminium foil face that are often used for floor insulation but I have not been able to find them so far. I agree it looks like it will be really tough to replace !!

Is the main job of the insulation to keep the heat or sound away--I guess heat??

Looking at the material my sense is that it is more an acoustic shield rather than a heat shield. This would mean that some sort of anechoic foam would do the trick provided it could withstand the heat (likely the reason why the original stuff doesn't last - my car has only 18000km). I am sure that a company like 3M would make something that would be a reasonable replacement - is there anyone from 3M or equivalent out there who could comment?

    Thanks

I have the same problem on a Mondial. I've seen the 'hi-temp' Aluminum lined Dynamat advertised for engine compartment sound deadening, but never any replacement foam products (which do readily deteriorate). Any experience with this out there?

Ive been having the same problem with the insulation.
I spoke to Ferrari at Maranello (01784 486648) a few weeks ago and they informed me that the grey coloured foam/material which attached to the engine bonnet is available, although not in stock.
    prices being as follows

when looking at engine bonnet with lid up from rear of car
left hand side £39.59 + Vat
    centre piece £26.40 + Vat
    Rigth Piece £39.50 + Vat

Seems rather expensive, (and not neccessarily available immediately) my solution has been to find a heat resistant metally material with the same dimple pattern and spray it the grey black colour then fix it to some heat resistant foam in order to give me the required thickness and spongyness as its only thin.
The test verssion I did worked well so hopefully in the next few weeks when the car finnally gos to the bodyshop it will all be fixed.

Foam cost £5.00 from local contract furntiture manufacturers
metally plating with dimple pattern - £20

Hopefully be able to post some pictures soon...

I have been given some numbers by a chap who restores ferraris in the area to try the following people
Camthorne - faom supliers and general engineering bits - in stoke 01782 745588
Norton - I am told it may be worth a call 01785 760099

The 328 ( at least my 87 model ) doesn't have the foam at these locations, only on the bulkhead in front of the engine, did you replace that also ?

indeed you are both correct, remember I was referring to the 3.2 mondial, see title in the reply - althought the sticky foam is also available at the places stated otherwise get the right colour thickness and texture macth and use an adehisive spraymade by wurth that will stick it to the bay
sorry for any confusion there guys

    That's the catalyst information sticker. I'd assume it's a U.S.-only item?
