Hi I recently bought my first ferrari a 1987 328gts. Have just serviced the car and its running well - that is until i get to 5000rpm. After that i feel like the car is not building any revs and just sits there. i feel it could be a result of the fuel injection system leading to fuel starvation. could anyone please help walk me through the process of identifying and fixing the problem. thanks and regards rai
Did you check Throttle microswitch ? https://www.hella.com/techworld/us/Technical/Sensors-and-actuators/Throttle-switch-3799/
Scroll down to the Mondial section. Under the title "Some TLC for my QV" look at page 22, post 546. Lots of filters in the FI system that can cause an issue.
What service was just done? Could be something as simple as an old fuel filter causing fuel pressure loss. Post in the 308/328 section for more eyes on it as well.
I feel the issue has something to do with the ignition system. I tried changing the plugs to new iridium plugs from superformance but twice when i install the new plugs there is a misfire from different cylinders each. Maybe this is whats causing the lag at high revs. When I go back to the old plugs they fire ok and there is no misfire. I'm guessing this is because the new iridium plugs are demanding more current which the coil isn't able to provide. Is there any way I can service the ignition coil or do I just buy a new one and try.
Welcome to the forum and 3x8 ownership! One tip to start off - I feel you'd be better off asking your question in the model-specific 308/328 forum section, rather than in this generic Technical Q&A section - a lot of the 3x8 experts never look at this section. It's worthwhile to confirm good fuel pressure, then the CIS injection system is pretty reliable and trouble-free if it's running well. I think you're on the right track to suspect the ignition system - my 1984 Euro 308 QV had a slight misfire above ~5700 rpm for several years, trying to run it higher than that resulted in the acceleration tapering off. I had Iridium plugs, but they weren't the problem. It turned out that the original Magnetti Marelli electronic ignition boxes were both failing, I suspect the vacuum advance system had leads internal to the boxes and there was no ignition advance. After trying new plug wires, plugs, coils, distributor caps and rotors, etc, rather than pay a few thousand dollars for a pair of rebuilt MM ignition boxes I gave up and installed the Electromotive XDI ignition kit from Nicks Forza Ferrari - it's specific to the 308/328, and solved the issue entirely. My engine runs smoother, revs quicker and pulls strongly to 7500 rpm, eliminated much of the pops and bangs on deceleration - a huge improvement. There are multiple threads in the 308/328 section about this ignition upgrade and also about rebuilt Magnetti Marelli boxes. Regards, Gordon
