Sounds like the mixture screws are set too lean. Does it drop instantly back to idle, or does it hang up above 1000 for a bit and slowly wind down?

The situation you have described is more than likely a lean condition in the idle circuit or a leak in the exhaust headers but there are always others.

First, remove and blow compressed air through your idle jets and see how it runs; can't hurt anything.

Second, as a simple experiment, turn each carb idle screw out by an 1/8 or 1/4 turn and see if that solves the problem. Keep track of where you are so you can go back to original setting if required. If it stops popping odds are good that it just needs to be syncronized and tuned.

    Good luck,

    Drew

Probably the mix screws are in too far and youve got the throttles open too far to compensate. As suggested, try backing all the mixture screws out a bit and see if it increases idle speed. Keep screwing them out and dropping the idle speed down until you have it running decent.

Someone here should know the correct number of turns out for your particular carbs, as a starting point, but the fuels today dont burn like the fuels that were available when that car was new, due to lower btu energy fuels, you have to "experiment" a little. IIRC I was out about 4 1/2 turns on my 308, but thats where it ran the best. Just remember to set all the mixture screws the same number of turns out.
