Can someone let me know if there is a substitute part for the in-the-tank Borletti fuel level sensor P/N 8013-990-0, or knows where I can get a new one or a used working unit?
I know it is possible to adapt a universal one but in the process, I do not want to fry the gauge on the dash board because the universal units come in many different working Ohm ranges. The problem is which range is compatible with the 330 dash board gauge. Does anyone know the working range of the Borletti sensor and dash board gauge?
Has any one done a successful modification? If so, what was the Ohm range for the universal unit and what make?
    Thank you for your assistance.

Interesting project. If you are forced to modifying your defunct existing unit with a variable resistor/float, don't ignore marine units which are often more robust than automotive components.

Note the range of resistance on the chart below and link with a ham or electronics buddy who will be able to easily learn of the match with your gauge. Then you are left with a simple mechanical problem to adapt it to your present sensor.

Incidentally, establishing 'full' and empty on the gauge is easy, getting a reasonably accurate 1/2 for a linear readout is harder.

Thank you for your response, Paul. I can't modify the sending unit itself (basically the variable resistor part) because I had it at a repair shop for some time (rewinding) and the owner decided to retire. All I was able to recuperate was the mounting hardware.

It would appear that from the Ohm ranges below the pictured unit, the GM pre-65 figures would be the safest as a starting point. A kind Ferrari fellow provided me with the Ohm readings from the sending off his Lusso and he had 0-100 Ohms. The 100 Ohms reading would be for a pegged/or below empty, thus the 100 Ohms figure.

Right now, I am trying to get a working sending sensor in the tank although your recommended "interesting project" is very tempting. That may very well be on the side burner soon. It would appear that the pictured universal unit has quite a working range. It could work on our cars completely full, then maybe floating somewhere the wide band middle range and then bone dry empty with the idiot light on. That could be fun!

Again, thank you very much for your recommendations and for having taken the time to respond.

    Yves
