I took my GTC to my first Concours (FAC Garden State Fall Classic) and noticed the difference of the proper Cheney clamps on a beautifully restored 275 GTS. Although my car has some original Cheney and copiglia clamps, it also had some conventional stainless steel hose clamps on the radiator hose and heater hose. As I'm always trying to improve the car. I looked for some original Cheney clamps and found they are very hard to get. I resorted to a set of reproduction Cheney clamps from XK's unlimited for a 3.8L XKE. They had quite a variety in the kit and I figured I could pick out what I needed. I found the larger ones worked fine on the radiator hoses, but the smaller diameter ones for the heater hoses just don't seem to have sufficient clamping power. They are the right diameter and I carefully installed them according to the directions. I Lubed and test ran them up and down their length before installation. Once installed. I started the car up and it leaked right away from the smaller clamps around the heater hoses. The hoses are in good shape so that's not the problem. I re-positioned and re-tightened the clamps and it still leaked badly. I put the stainless steel hose clamps back on and it's tight as a drum again.

I really would prefer to stay as original as possible, but I drive the car frequently and am not willing to sacrifice functionality and peace of mind for originality. I understand the reproduction Cheney's are known to have inadequate clamping force, and I have to concur. I see some British car guys using Jubilee clamps of similar design which clamp harder but have hexagonal heads and lack the Cheney logo. Probably 1/2 or whole point off at a Concours.

Has anyone already been down this path? Does anyone have any original 36/21 Cheney's for the heater hoses laying around?? I appreciate any advice.

Jaguars in the 60s used Cheney clamps. Find a place that parts out Jags or has used Jag parts. Then have the clamps replated. That is what we have done for years.

Are the new ones not brighter and shinier than the originals?

Your 275 GTS should have Copiglia (cotter pin type wind up) clamps on all of the heater hose connections. Look at the factory parts book to confirm this. They clamp very well.

There are only two sizes of Copiglia clamps available today, 5mm and 9mm:
    Copiglia banding
Originally Ferrari used a size in-between these two on the heater hoses, but they are not available any more. I use the smaller 5mm size, as they are fit better on heater hoses and are easier to work with.

    John,

I installed original Cheneys a few years ago and my experience was that they needed to be tightened more than regular hose clamps. When I first put them on, they leaked also, but they were fine after tightening them a bit more. They didn't require excessive force, but definitely more than I was used to with regular clamps. Maybe this is due to the solid band having more resistance to tightening or maybe the slots in regular hose clamps allow them to bite into the hose a bit more. In my experience, a bit more force is normal, but if they can't be tightened, then maybe the repros aren't good.

Thanks Peter. The concern to me is more appearance. From what I have gathered, the "original look" is a dull, darker gray, whereas the new Jaguar ones are bluer and shinier. Am I wrong? Look at John B's photos at the top of the thread and you'll see what I mean.

    Thanks Peter,
The instructions that came with the kit did state they require more force. I tightened them just short of stripping (learning that the feel hard way and trashing the damaged clamps) and they still leaked. As Brian said, the parts book indicates "Copiglia" cotter pin clamps for the heater hoses. The band comes in 30 meter rolls, so it looks like I'll have plenty to practice on.

Can someone post the sizes, please? What I am asking is what number Cheney clamp corresponds to what diameter hose. Thank you in advance.

John -- Mine are not quite as dull as in John's first pic. There are some great photos of the Cheney clamps in this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vintage-thru-365-gtc4-sponsored-vintage-driving-machines/355761-cheney-clamps.html

30m should be just enough :) The Copliglias also required a bit more tightening than expected.

    John,
Below is a table of hose clamps for a series II 330 GT 2+2 I took from Tom Yang's site. I couldn't find a similar table for 330 GTC's, but thought this would be close as Series II 330 GT 2+2's were made until 1967.

While we are on the subject, what is the correct orientation of the four clamps at the thermostat of the 250GT engine? Thanks.

A 330GTC also uses Copiglia clamps on all of the heater hose connections. These were used up until 1968 when they started using Angst clamps on the 365 GT 2+2 and then Serflex clamps on the Daytona.

An interesting distinction I heard is that any hose that needs to be removed to pull the engine gets a Cheney, otherwise Copiglia or wire clamp.

The Parts manual is a better guide, but seems to be in agreement.

JohnB: I am the source for the statement about the hose clamp locations ( I posted it some time ago) and it is correct. Ferrari was much more logical in the way the cars were built than many of us tend to believe.

The parts manual is a bit tricky as a guide because the drawings don't seem to be always "anatomically correct". The 330 GT parts manual appears to show Cheneys in place for the heater hoses in the drawing. Item 21 is just listed as part 94909 without a brand specified, but item 8 is the main radiator hose clamp which is listed as 94103 with Cheney Tipo 2 A as additional info. The parts listing detail supports that Cheney was used in main radiator hose and not in the heater hose, but it's a subtle distinction and the drawing is misleading (to my eyes anyway). It's great we have experts that take the time clarify all this because sometimes even the official documentation is misleading.

Thanks Peter, and totally agree on both counts.

Here's the 330 GTC Parts diagram. While it looks like a Cheney in the 330 GT manual, it looks more like a Copiglia in the GTC manual to me. It's a bit clearer in real life than it came out on the scan.

In the 330 GT parts manual it's described as a "Fascetta", which I believe translates to a clamp.
The 330 GTC diagram describes it as a "Fascetta a nastro" Which I think translates more to a ribbon or band clamp.

Sleuthing this stuff out with an old manual, magnifying glasses and Google translator is part of the fun.

Thanks John. That certainly thickens the plot. The clamps in your GTC parts book drawing definitely look like Copiglia, and the ones in the GT look like Cheneys. The part number of the GT heater hose clamp (94909) also seems to be in the same family as the Cheney part number on the radiator hose clamp (94103) (both start with "94") whereas the part number for the GTC heater hose is clamp starts with "80" (80815).

The GT does show a Copiglia for the radiator overflow hose and the part is described as "fascetta a nastro" (the same way the Copiglias are described in your GTC parts book), so I'm now thinking that Cheneys are correct for a 330 GT heater hose and Copiglias are correct for the GTC heater hose.

I currently have Cheneys on the heater hose and a Copiglia on the radiator overflow hose, so I'm thinking this is correct from the above. I have some spare Copiglias, so I can change the heater hose if need be, but it looks like Cheneys might be correct for a GT.

My GTC came to me with all the original Safta Calore heater hoses, and every connection was with an original Copiglia clamp exactly as the parts manual shows. I've since replaced the old hoses and clamps. Be glad if your car specifies Cheney or the like because the Copiglia are a PIA to tighten in close quarters, especially on the heater boxes under the fender.

Were the original hoses cloth wrapped or smooth rubber? What is the acceptable replacement?
