I read that VIN 7467 sold at Villa Erba for 246,400 euros ($273,541). This is a 1965 Series 1 converted to 2HL. I was curious as to how many converted Series 1 there are? As a hybrid are they more valuable than the Series 1 original body? Or in a bubble burst will these cars lose their value more quickly?

Less than 5. Many more series 1 cars have been made into a xxx replica (and a few series 2 also)

I saw that car on the block at Villa Erba and it seemed a very nice "driver" that will give its new owner lots of fun. He has bought a very good looking V12 Ferrari at slightly less cost than others.

I do think though that it will always be a bit of a "mongrol" (though not a "dog" in anyway) and as such maybe not a great investment. Its never going to get a red folder from the factory either.

I hope it was bought to be enjoyed.

The auction description (1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 by Pininfarina | Villa Erba 2015 | RM Sotheby's) calls it a Series 1 but never mentions that the bodywork has been modified to make it look like a Series II. I wonder how many bidders knew this was a converted car -- you'd have to have at least some expertise to infer it from the description.

It's surprising they didn't convert the side vents. It may have done better with a full body conversion because the partial conversion makes it look even less correct. Of course, if the buyer wants to revert it to 4-headlight, the upside is that side vents are already correct. It looks like a very nice car otherwise and seems like a good price in the current market.

Being that the Series II cars are bringing more dough, the conversion was probably brought about with those thoughts in mind (and it's better looking IMHO). Although, you'd think that you would be dealing with informed buyers. Even more surprising, it's still missing the 5 speed and has the rust prone floors.

7467 is an interim car, 5 speed w/hanging pedals.

Hi Kerry-Yes, you are correct. I saw "4 speed" in the first sentence of the auction description. I should have known by the S/N, as I formerly owned S/N 6997, an interim car as well. Technically not really a Series I car as described either. :)

Thanks for the pics, L Wayne.

Do you or Kerry have any guess as to how many S1 may have had twin headlights converted to singles?

    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

Here, Kerry estimates less than five, but so far I have six cars listed as straight 4HL to 2HL conversions, and three more in which the noses have been modified beyond just conversion to SII appearance:

    5617
    5723
5991 (converted to 2HL setup with GTC-style nose)
6537 (converted to 2HL setup with beastly front-end treatment)
    6635
    6747
6829 (converted to 2HL setup with recessed, covered headlights)
    7411
    7467

I hadn't really looked at this car prior to the auction, but those rocker panels don't like right either...

Rockers are an adaptation of other limited production Wax cars - undoubtedly fake..

A bit more chrome always helps the sale of an old beater!
