When fitting new main bearing shells what is the procedure regarding the position of the oil feed holes? On a pair of bearings one half has two oil feed holes and the other half has none. What I am interested in is does the half with the feed holes fit into the block or into the main bearing cap? Is there a preferred way to fit these?

Look at where the oil passages in the block are and how they match up to the holes in the bearing shell. Typically there is a groove in the backside of the shell that lines up with the holes. What is important is that the oil make it to the crank journal.

Are the bearing shells grooved? Or just oiling holes? Where did the bearings come from?

The original design had an oiling groove and holes in the lower shell and a plain upper shell. Knowing how the crankshaft is drilled for supplying oil to all the main and rod bearings I don't see how it can work without that design.

Photos of the block and the bearings would be helpful.

Don't need to see the block. It has a full circumference groove in block and cap to feed the lower bearing shell. The lower shell needs a groove to feed the oil passage into the crank so one of the 2 holes in the crank will always be exposed to oil supply.

Thanks Brian & Tim. I managed to get to see the mains shells and they are one half plain and one half with a groove as you both said. Now it all makes sense to me. Appreciate your help & knowledge.
