So in looking for a new car for my dad, it's come down to those three.

    330i:
    Pros:
Amazing BMW handling, steering and ride
    Silky smooth and powerful I6
    Great stereo

    Negatives:
    Styling
    Price

    IS350:
    Pros:
FAST for a sedan, goes like a bloody rocket ship
    Looks great
    Interior
    Cons:
    Handles like a dog
    The worst stability control ever
    Pricey
    Small back seat

    G35:
    Pros:
Drives like a bastard (reminds me of my friends hopped-up Nissan 240SX)
    Sounds great
    Cheap
    Cons:
    Cheap price=cheap materials
    Ubiquitous(theyre everywhere)
Not as much prestige as BMW or Lexus (I couldn't give a ****, but I get the feeling it's important to my dad)

What are your experiences with those three cars?

My dad is currently driving an E39 530i

How does your dad like the e39? There are hellish expensive when they make the "BMW turn". I have an e39 540 and in 4 months it cost me $12,500 including an inspection II, rad, wheel speed sensor, fog light, another V belt, cats, water pump, starter, ignition and in the last 14 days the engine light came on 4 times. Twice for, 1 loose primary 02 sensor and 1 loose secondary sensor. I had the car on a flat bed 4 times in 3 months. The primary sensors were replaced already and the service history is bullet proof, so it wasn't due to cheap owners.

Under warranty it won't cost anything except time and in 4 years, will word get out that the Bimmers are crap after the firts 3 months? If so it could be a tough sell at a much lower price. As soon as winter is over, the car will be sold ASAP and I won't enter into another BMW unless I'm given a brand new one... and I'll probably sell that the very next day.

I love the way that car shoots off into the night and stays still at top speed but it isn't worth the coin to keep.

0 issues with the 530i. Plus it's a lease so it's gone before problems can occur

P.S. depending on how much coinage you want to spend, you could make your search include more cars. I wouldn't buy the other two cars on your list either.

I thought you were buying it outright... I would search the web, I've read some stories about the new 530's. It isn't fun having a car you can't drive most of the time. Best of luck with whatever car you choose.

If he intends to have passengers in the back, the 3 series is a big step backwards from the 5 series in terms of room.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 330i sedan because it's too compact to be a good 4 seater. The 330Ci or M3 are great cars though.

Having worked at a car wash for the longest time now, the G35 is not cheap at all. It is definately of comparable quality to a 3 series BMW, and very nice. I'd say go for a G35 coupe...

Sold my G35 Coupe last year. GREAT CAR! I miss it. Bought an S430, what a drag. Getting rid of the Mercedes later this year and looking for another fun car to drive. The G35 was definately fun. It's not about costs. The G35 was about $38K the Mercedes $80K. I'll take the G35 again. I'm getting rid of the Mercedes later this year. Looking for the next fun daily driver. I'm just glad the 355 is here for the weekends.

I don't know, maybe it's a little biased on my part because I've been with BMW for 9 years but, I'd take the new 3 Series over any of the two you just mentioned. If you're buying new, you get the 4 years/50k miles FREE MAINTENANCE and as far as resale value goes, it has a much better resale value than the other two mentioned. I guess the better way to explain it is look at the cost of ownership, resale value, styling & performance and you will see that BMW will be on top over the other two. BTW, I'm with Lotus now but, still love the Bimmers. :D

The new G35 looks even better in the photos from the recent Detroit Auto Show. And, the Infinti GT-R will be out the middle of 2007 and it will look great with exotic car type performance...at least from what I've read.

I too have owned BMWs for 15 years now...an M3, a 740iL and two M5s...I still have my 107,xx mile e39 M5 which I use as my daily driver. But, I do not like the looks nor the SMG shifter of the new e60 M5. That being the case, I have a deposit on a 2007 Infinti GT-R which will replace my M5 as my daily driver...
