Here's the deal: I just bought a 1991 348ts. Last 30K was in May 1999 @ 23,XXX miles. Today, it has 31,000 miles. If I wait till next winter, what are the odds of a catastrophe?

So the poll is... 1) Do it now, or 2) Forget it till next winter.

    Colin,

    Do it now!

What's the difference? You'll need to do it anyway. What advantage will you gain by waiting?

But I thought this "new" 348 was already serviced?!

How is it? Do you have it yet? Pics please :)

Don't think I'm confusing Colin's (HuskerNtexas) car with yours...

HuskerNtexas said that the 1991 car would "have a fresh 30K service"...

Maybe we should wait for him to get back to us :)

Just do it now. That way all you have to think about is 1 how you are going to sneak off from work, and 2 which way you are going to point it when you do.

When I said "fresh service", I was counting paying for that, in addition to the sales price. Sorry for the confusion. The car needs a 30K service, but had that factored into the price.

However, I'm sad to say my bank told me yesterday they would not extend my line of credit to purchase a vehicle such as this out of state without having personally seen it. Since I can't get to L.A. until late next week at the soonest, this 348 is likely going to ANOTHER HAPPY OWNER!

Hi guys. I have a question about the cost of the 30k service. Could anyone give me any advice. Am looking into getting a '95 348 with 41k on it, but no records. Looks to be in great cosmetic shape. Was thinking about trying to negotiate a price reflective of my having to do a 30k service immediately upon getting it. What does the group think about this? Any general things to look for on '95 348s? I seem to be reading the '94s and '95s are pretty good cars.

The bank told you this after 9:05 PM? What bank do you use? I'd like that kind of access to my banker :D

re: the original question, yes, get it shipped directly to Norwoods and then drive it back to Waythehelloutwest, Texas

The major services should be done every 5 years regardless of miles accumulated in that interval. Rubber dries out and cracks. Call it an insurance policy on your engine. its been 6 years.. Do it.. Do it..

    Hi Frank,

I think you may want to start your own thread or search the archives on this topic. There is a wealth of information on this, as it has been discussed many, many times.

Just hit search and go to the "Advanced Search" option. Then, on the left, choose "Search Titles Only"; then type: 348 AND service. I did it myself and there's plenty there! Or enter any other key word that you think might be relevant (Just be sure to use the Boolean term AND so that all the words are included in the search results. Sorry if you know this stuff already!).

But, long story short, the engine-out ("major" or "30K") service on a 348 will run you several thousand dollars: if a private mechanic does it, the cost could be as low as $3,500; if a dealer does it, the cost will be at least $5,500 and as high as maybe $7,500, depending on what the car needs.

The Spiders ('94, '95) are the best of the 348s, but they still have the same potential for problems as the rest. Proceed with caution on a car that has no records! And with 41,000 miles and no service, I wouldn't pay more than $55,000 for such a 348 Spider. Send me a private message if you have any questions.
